It's not the food, it's the preparation. I have had excellent food in the UK, but I have also had some of the most bland, cooked to death stuff imaginable. All depends on who's in the kitchen. 8)

I thought english food was the reason why the british actually run for their boats to sail elsewhere, thereby acciedently creating the British empire. :D

It was the cheapskate Brits back in the mid 1880's who created a market for cheap, processed food like white bread, refined sugar and the likes.

I'd waited all my life to try Yorkshire pudding but when it finally
arrived on my plate...It was like meeting the girl of your dreams
and she turns out to be ugly! :D

I'll leave cuisine where it belongs - in France!

cheers

Well it certainly lasts if nothing else. I still have my great-grandfather's 'lucky' hardtack biscuit from WWI. Hard being the operative word - I could probably drive nails into planks with it!

In the Rhodesian Army we were issued Brit Army rations dated 1936.
Bully beef only gets better with age! You wouldn't believe some of the deals I offered QM to get better or even more recent food! :?

We called the Hardtack 'dog bisquits.' They actually weren't all that bad...
And we got quite creative at cooking bully beef. But ultimately, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Some guys actually boiled the hardtack to make them soft, then fried them and used jam to make what modern gastronomes call 'pop tarts!'

I read some where (and I believe ther to be some truth to it) that canned food changed the nature of warfare more than the advances in weaponry.

Reb, there was something wrong with that Yorkshire pudding!

Reb, there must have been something wrong with that Yorkshire pudding you ate. It should be light and crisp and puffy. Unfortunately some people make it heavy and soggy.

It's definitely worth trying again.

Yorkshire puds are best when there hot, crisp and served with just gravy and beef inside the case
