Post by cwbuff2 »

I am looking for any information on battles occuring in or near Dordrecht Holland in November 1944. I am researching a relative who was in the Wehrmact and was KIA on 03 November 1944. Any info on what German units were engaged would be appreciatied. Thanks.

Moerdijk ? Lage Zwaluwe

Can not be Dordrecht, but I think you do mean Moerdijk, which is south of Dordrecht.
That has to be a unit of LXXXVIII Armee Korps, most likely 245 or 711 I.D or 256 Volksgren Div.

Most of the soldiers who got wounded in the withdrawal campaing in southwest Brabant were sent to hospitals north of the rivers. Mostly to Gouda.
It could very well be though that the soldier you mentioned got killed while manning a piece of artillery.
Do you have more information about him?

Information From the "Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgraberfursorge"

Your relative, Werner Weber, who was killed in action on November 3, 1944 in the vicinity of Dortrecht (Dordrecht) Holland, is laid to rest at the German Military Cemetery in Ysselsteyn among the unknown dead warriors.

During the concluded period of re-interment of the German war-dead to this cemetery, a definite location of his original graveside could not be established. Therefore, we have to go from the assumption, that Werner Weber is one of the Unknowns who have found their final resting place at this location.

The German Military Cemetery at Ysselsteyn is located in the Province of Limburg, 11 kilometers southwest of Venray. The administration office is located at the entrance to the cemetery."

A lot of members of other smaller units were buried on a graveyard
in Dordrecht, I had a list that was made by the resistance on the list
the units, date and place were the soldier was killed.
Sadly the list was on a HD which is crashed.
Most of the soldiers died at Dordrecht, I believe the list started
somewhere around the end of October.
The problem is that the soldiers do not have to got killed during the
fighting, Dordrecht was a pretty big town with some hospitals, so
it could be they died in one of these hospitals.
Greetings Jack.

The best thing to do is write to the WASt in Germany and ask for his militairy-file.

Jack, do you mean this list: http://www.museum19401945.nl/images/lij ... velden.htm

Since Weber has been burried among the unknown, he was never identified, so obviously couldn't be on any list containing graves in Dordrecht.

Hi Ypenburg,
It could very well be the same list.
The list is now at the gemeente or stadsarchief Dordrecht.
Greetings and thanks for the link,
Jack.

On november 3 1944 the frontline south of Dordrecht started at Nieuw-Vossemeer.
Dutch Millitary Resistance Wing liberated Tholen Isle on october 28 and did battle with at least one Zug (armed with MG,mortar and sniper) in aid for the Canadian advance untill 3 november at the ferry between Oud-Vossemeer and Nieuw-Vossemeer.
KIA :B.Franken (Dutch) , unknown amount of Germans

I have some new information on this soldier. We have found the notification that was sent to the family upon his death. He as Gefreite Werner Heinz Weber. He was awarded the EK2 and the Infantry Assault Badge in Silver. The death notification was post marked by Feldpostnummer 28 082 E dated 4 November 1944 . It states that he was killed in action in the area of the Dutch canals and rivers during a severe local heavy artillery attack. If I have the Feldpostnummer correct, that makes him a member of Grenadier-Regiment 936, 245. Infanterie-Division.
