TO&E

Post by Tom Houlihan »

I started planning a project some time ago, and I've run into an authenticity stumbling block. Ultimately, I want to have a 1/285th scale Panzer Division laid out on a BIG board. Being anal retentive, I want it to look right. The reference I have is a US Army period manual TM-E 30-451. On some items, it's a little vague. [no differentiation btwn 1 or 4 barrel flak, mtrcles w/ or w/o sidecars, soft skin vehicles, etc.] Is there another reference available and accessible, that can really help me detail this? I have time, and I want to have it all planned out before I start building it.

Panzer Division.

Post by Dan Mouritzsen »

Hi,

Modell Fan made an article with the drawings of an entire Panzer division some years ago. Everything was there. I can scan it and send it to you when my scanner comes back from Epson again. It has been gone for four weeks so it must come back in the near future.

regards

This is a mail that I got from Michael W (don't know his full last name):
Early 1944 Panther-Abteilung
Stab Panzer Abteilung(KStN 1107/01.11.41)
Stabskompanie Panzer-Abteilung(KStN 1150a/01.11.43)
Nachricten-Zug: 3 Panthers
Aufkl.-Zug: 5 Panthers
Mittlere Panzerkompanie "Panther", 4 kompanies in the Abteilung
(KStN 1177/01.11.43)
2 Panthers in the Kompanietrupp plus four zugs each with 5 Panthers.
Panzer-Werkstatt-Zug "Panther"(KStN 1185a(fG)/10.01.43)

Thus on paper a total of 96 Panthers. However, it was rare for most
Panther-Kompanies to have the 4.Zug. So, a figure of 76 Panthers per Abteilung is far more common.

Mid 1944 Panther-Abteilung
Stab Panzer Abteilung(KStN 1107a(fG)/01.04.44)
Stabskompanie Panzer-Abteilung(KStN 1150(fG)/01.4.44)
Nachricten-Zug: 3 Panthers
Aufkl.-Zug: 5 Panthers
Panzerkompanie "Panther", 4 kompanies in the Abteilung
(KStN 1177(fG)/01.4.44)
2 Panthers in the Kompanietrupp plus three zugs each with 5 Panthers.
Versorgungs-Kompanie(KStN 1151a(fG)/01.04.44)
Panzer-Werkstatt-Zug(KStN 1185a(fG)/10.01.43)

The above KStNs reflected a major change in the organization of the Panzertruppen. The fG stands for freie Gliederung. This organization meant that the supply and baggage vehicles were no longer in the kompanies but in the Versorgungs-Kompanie. Thus was done to let the combat formation worry about combat. Also, it allowed the supply formations to be more efficient. Anyway, a mid-1944
Panther-Abteilung would have a total of 76 Panthers.

Late 1944 Panther-Abteilung
Stab und Stabskompanie Panzer Abteilung "Panther"
(KStN 1107(fG)Ausf.B/01.11.44)
Nachricten-Zug: 3 Panthers
Aufkl.-Zug: 5 Panthers
Panzerkompanie "Panther", 4 kompanies in the Abteilung
(KStN 1177(fG)Ausf.A/01.11.44)
2 Panthers in the Gruppefuehrer plus three zugs each with 5 Panthers.
Panzerkompanie "Panther", 4 kompanies in the Abteilung
(KStN 1177(fG)Ausf.b/01.11.44)
2 Panthers in the Gruppefuehre plus three zugs each with 4 Panthers.
Panzerkompanie "Panther", 4 kompanies in the Abteilung
(KStN 1177a(fG)/01.11.44)
1 Panther in the Gruppefuehrer plus three zugs each with 3 Panthers.
Versorgungs-Kompanie(KStN 1151a(fG)/01.04.44)
Panzer-Werkstatt-Zug(KStN 1187(fG)/01.01.44)

Now it gets confusing, since a Panther-Kompanie can have three different organizations. The first two were used generally used by Panzer-Divisions with an
SS-Panzer-Division standing a greater chance of having the 17 tank
Panther-Kompanie. The 10 tank Panther-Kompanie was generally used in
Panzer-Brigades or independent Panther-Abteilungs. However, at this late stage of the war anything was possible.

So, a Panther-Abtielung at this stage of the war could have 76 Panthers, 64 Panthers or 31 Panthers. Regarding the Versorgungs-Kompanie and the
Werkstatt-Zug, I know the Panther-Abteilung had them but I think the dates and KStN numbers maybe wrong.

Thanks for the help, but I apparently failed to properly convey the extent of my "anal-retentiveness!" I have the basic formation for the Division, with the various regimental and battalion sub units. The part I'm having trouble with is where the American Intel types lumped similar equipment types together. For example:
The listing for 20mm AA guns just says 25 for the PzGren Bn. It doesn't specify the number of towed vs. SP, or the number of flakvierling. Division services just lists a number for motor vehicles, without specifying Horchs, VWs, ambulances, etc.
You see, part of the reason this project has taken so long is that I am trying to display EVERY vehicle in the division! When I put together the panzer battalion, I want all the trucks, kubels, motorcycles, etc. I know it wasn't seen in the field, but I ultimately want to have the entire division layed out. Hell, I may not ever finish it, but if I do, it'll look impressive!

I know this thread is almost 2 years old. I stumbled across it while doing a search. However, I found it interesting as I have been doing a similar project for the past few years.

So, Tom, how did it turn out or are you still working on it?

Well, have you ever heard the phrase "Overcome by Events?" That's the current status. Other things have become more important than that project, so it went to the back burner for a while.

I still want to do it, and I have what I believe is all the information I need, thanks to Ron K., but I just can't work on it right now.

I know that feeling! I have various parts of the 2.Panzer-Division modeled using GHQ armor on a one-to-one basis plus a parts of Jagdpanther and Tiger abteilung. The project has been going on for years. This year I've managed about company a month but the two previous years I did zero!

While GHQ has expanded their product quite a lot, they are still missing a few items. I'd kill for a 3 ton kitchen truck! Let me know if you need any vehicles. Perhaps we can swap.

Mike, I'd love to! The only problem is that I haven't started getting the vehicles yet!

The work I've done so far is trying to figure out how many total vehicles I'll need. Then, trying to see what I can convert, and what I won't have to. You already know there's a lot involved....

Tom

I saw a piece in a magazine years ago that would amuse you boys - the American Army set up a scenario much like you describe - only it was a Soviet Motor Rifle Division facing an American tank unit on the Trace.

The guy assigned to get all the pieces and set it up certainly had a dream assignment. They used tables on wheels and a real area of Germany was modeled with buildings and trees and all of it.

The photos were great.

I'm a bit anal retentive myself - but I set my stuff up in 1/32 scale so to do a whole pz div would ruin my budget, cause my wife to divorce me and would require a whole warehouse.

But one summer my brother actually got access to an empty warehouse and off we went. I set up the Gazala battle in North Africa and it was grand - Bir Hakim was actually far enough away from the main front to be encircled. (Had more pieces in those days though and was single). For that armoured battalions had a dozen tanks each to give you an idea of scale. It was pretty awesome. But we only had a three day weekend so we had to hustle like crazy to set it up and then take it back down! And we were too dumb to bring a camera!

I wish you all luck with your projects - sounds like fun to me. but I warn you - once you get that pz div set up you'll go crazy until you have some allied troops to fight them!

cheers

Tom,

It does'nt sound like you've got all the info by a long way. I presume you wish to portray a 1:1 PD in 1/285th scale models. If you are to do it you would need all the KStN's. and they have not all survived. Starting now it will take years to accumulate, if you can find them. Then to authenticity. For example, the PD44 authorized about 2/3 MT as cross country and 1/3 commercial types. In reality, the proportions were reversed.

You were asking about 2cm Flak in PGR's. Taking the PD44 which was not formalized until 3Aug44, but included unit orgs. dated 1Apr44 and 1Jul44 mainly, we have:-

PGR (gp)
PG Coy 'c' (gp) 3 X = 7 SPW 251/17
PG Hvy. Coy. (fg) 1 X = 6 2cm Flak towed by Maultier
PGE Coy. 'B' 1 X = 1 SPW 251/17

PGR (Mot)
PG Hvy. Coy. (fg) 2 X = 6 2cm Flak towed by Maultier

If you want the rest in the PD44 then just ask.

1944 Panzer-Division TO & E

Post by Ron Klages »

Tom,

Here is a breakout of the equipment, weapons and personnel for the Army 1944 Panzer-Division. Remember, this is the authorized or theoretical TOE and each Panzer-Division could and did vary significantly from this TOE. Some Panzer-Divisions had two companies of StuGs replacing the Panzer IVs as an example. This breakout provides a sense of the organization for the Panzer Division from April 1944 and on.

I hope you find this of interest and use but I am sure there are omissions and errors in this. If nothing else I have probably made some typing errors. The only correct way to show a TOE is to have the KstNs and not all of them are in existence.

I also apologize for the rather long post but I feel that many out there will appreciate this information

Best regards and I look forward to additions and corrections.

Ron Klages

Hi Ron,

You're still equal to yourself, I mean very impressive. But you have forgotten in your inventory the little dog, mascot of the 3rd tank of the 2nd platoon of the 1st company of the 1st battalion
To be serious : Nice job.

So long.
All we need it's a Dackel in each pocket
