Question re three SS-Oberführer

Post by Ken McCanliss »

Paul Kresin - promoted SS-Oberführer 10 Jan 1945 (mit Wirkung vom 9 Nov 1944)

Hans Griep - promoted 20 Apr 1945

Karl Schwagelberger - promoted 20 Apr 1945

Who were these men? Were they members of the SS before they were promoted to Oberführer?

Paul Kresin was a Heer officer. As an Oberst, he headed Arko 138, which functioned as the artillery command staff for the III.(germanisches) SS-Panzerkorps, and was awarded the German Cross in Gold on September 1, 1944. He's not listed in the November 9, 1944 SS-Dienstalterliste, but it is quite possible that after his prolonged experience working alongside Felix Steiner and Joachim Zeigler that, as with Oberst iG Ziegler, he accepted a permanent transfer to the Waffen-SS. I have never read this previously, but it makes sense in the context.

Kresin appears to have transferred fully. Had the Arko post in November 1944 while being authorized to wear SS uniform equal to his Army rank. He became a full SS member (SS# 499 458) dating when he joined. DAL were often behind events, especially if close to time joining or odd instances (many listed can also be off by months for assignment). Due to having an SS number, he was just given permission to wear uniform equal to his Army rank during his initial months service. Unconfirmed, he was killed in April 1945 near Oranienburg.

Marc and Mark: Thanks for your responses.

Many thanks for your replies. I was interested in these three as they all received post- 9 Nov 1944 promotions, and yet were not listed in the 9 Nov 1944 Dienstaltersliste at a lower rank.
