Fernandez Barnabe & Jesus Vega Vasquez

Post by Kocjo »

I found these two soldiers in a book about Begunje prison here in Slovenia.

Fernandez Barnabe was a member of Blau Div.. He then deserted to Slovene Partisans and then deserted once more back to the Germans. He was put in prison on 25.10.'44 and 3 weeks later send to forced labour to Reichenau.

With him was also send another Spanish soldier Jesus Vega Vasquez (18 years old, from Oviedo, Asturia). He also deserted back from the Partisans (he was a member of some German army unit in Celje, Slovenija). He was captured by Gestapo near Kamnik and then send to Begunje.

Regards,
Kocjo

Hi Kocjo,

These soldiers, Fernandez Bernabé and Jesus Vega Vazquez, could be members of the Blue Legion (or soldiers of the Blue division if they deserted before 1942).

In these units there were some relations of Republicans (Communists, Socialists, even Anarchists) who enjoyed the Division to avoid problems with Franco's Government.

For example, Luis Garcia Berlanga, an actual cinema director, who fought in the Division Azul, was son of a Socialist (Avila Civil Governing) shooted by the Falangistas.
