23rd Hussars Royal Armoured Corps

Post by Mother Mave »

Hello, My first posting, so I hope you can help. I would like to know where the 23rd Hussars were on the 7th September 1944 as I am trying to tell the story of one of the men on our local War Memorial and want him to be remembered. He was Edward Joseph STENNER 7937374 and died on that day age 23 years, but don't know if it was in a battle or was he injured earlier and died that day? Any help would be appreciated. Kind regards, Mavis Williams

The 23rd Hussars were part of 11 Armoured Division and in the first week of September 1944 they were liberating Antwerp.
Have you tried searching for your man on the Commonwealth War Graves site ?

I think he was KIA near Merksem (suburb of Antwerp) while trying to cross the Albert Canal, but I am not sure of that information

MERKSEM. La commune sera coupée d'Anvers pendant près d'un mois après la libération de la ville, malgré les assauts répétés des troupes alliées. Elle finit par être libérée aussi le 2 octobre par les Canadiens, épaulés par la résistance anversoise.

The town of Merksem was liberated one month after the liberation of Antwerp despite several assaults of the allied troops. Merksem was liberated by canadian troops on the 2nd of the month of October 1944 with the help of the Belgian underground movements.

Sorry for my poor english language but it's not my native language

Hi Mavis,
On the 7th of September 1944, in an attempt to aid the beleaguered 4th Batallion, the King's Shropshire Light Infantry Regiment (159th Infantry Brigade) in their small bridgehead north of the Albert Canal.
At sunrise B company was ordered to push through to Merksem, but the order was soon countermanded due to the fact that the Shropshires were being pulled back. However, the Monmouths were now in close contact with the enemy. Tanks of the 23rd Hussars tried twice to attack the bridge underneath the railway but were driven away twice by two German 88mm guns

On the 2nd of October 1944, The 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade and two resistance batallions attacked Merksem from the west and south.

On the 3rd October 1944 the 6th Canadian Infantry Brigade of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division (1st British Corps) occupied Brasschaat. Meanwhile, the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade finally completed the clearing of Merksem, with the help of the Belgian Resistance.
