Sicherungs-Brigade 74

Post by Theodosius » Wed Aug 23, 2017 10:35 am

In France, from June to August 1944, under the command of the Hauptverbindungsstab 588 (Clermont-Ferrand), did the Sicherungs-Brigade 74 (Sicherungs-Regiment 1000 (mot.) and Aufklärungs-Abteilung 1000) also include the following units?

• One battalion of the Wolga-Tartarische Legion
• One battalion of the Aserbeidschanische Legion
• Panzerjäger-Kompanie 262
• Heeres-Flak-Abteilung 958 (mot.)
• Reserve-Artillerie-Abteilung 28
• III./SS-Polizei-Regiment 19

Did the Brigade include other units?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Hello Theodosius :D; just to start digging it..............................

Sicherungs-Brigade 74.

The Sicherungs-Brigade 74 was set up in Montargis, France, in June 1944. The brigade was established as a pure staff. Its creation was under the military commander in France. The brigade had attached the Sicherungs-Regiment 1000 and theSicherungs-Regiment 1010, as well as the Aufkl. Abt. 1000. The brigade was subordinated to the military commander of France. The brigade was recently deployed at Belfort. The replacement of the brigade table is unknown.

The Sicherungs Regiment 1000 came from Sicherungs Regiment 100 (as February 1944 Sich. Reg. 1000) organized with HQ, two battalions and a Panzerkompanie. Also the 4 and 8 Companies were Fla-Kp (AA).

The Sicherungs-Regiment 1010 was organized in June 1944 with HQ and two battalions.

It seems that Aufkl. Abt. 1000 had a Panzerspäh-Kp.

Its Commander was Kurt (Curt) von Jesser, who led it between June and August 1944, the notorious brigade or Kampfgruppe "Jesser", who had earned himself in the fight against the terror of the Resistance and Maquis. The kampfgruppe consisted of six mobile detachments of Heer (among them 1,200 men under Oberst Georg Coqui, brother-in-law of Wilhelm Fahrmbacher), foreign volunteers of the Wehrmacht (Volga Tatars and Azerbaijani of the East Legions), Mot.-elements (Flak, Reserve Artillery, Panzer , Panzerjäger and Feldgendarmerie) strengthened by Luftwaffe, SS, Sipo and SD.

Kampfgruppe Jesser was composed of:

A rapid column of about 1,200 soldiers under the command of Oberst Georg Coqui (SR 1000), composed of SR 1000 and AA 1000 (Rittmeister Ruby).

A slow column, also of about 1,200 soldiers, with trucks powered with gas (requisitioned), composed of soldiers of Ost Legion (Azerb-Legion 804 under Hauptmann Lange and Wolga-Tatar-Legion under Rittmeister Siknidef.

Elements rapids as 1 Verbindungstab (liaison with a signal Coy); 262. Panzerjäger Kompanie; a Coy of MG vehicles from Paris; 958. Motorisierte Flak Bataillon; 28. Reserve Artillerie Abteilung; 2 aerial squadrons with Stukas and Fieseler Storch operating from Aulnat.

Police elements.

Hello to all :D; more..............................

Sicherungs-Brigade 74.

The struggles of Mont Mouchet.

On June 02, 1944, coming from Mende, a German battalion moves on Saint-Chély-d'Apcher, Malzieu and Paulhac. The 2nd Company of Mont-Mouchet withstood for three hours the Germans trying to win the position. It is then when the 3rd Company and the truanes Corps-Franc intervene. Then a counterattack is launched on the enemy's flank by the 12th company that came from Chamblard. The German battalion must retreat after suffering great losses. The Maquisards only have three light wounded.

On June 07, a group of Maquisards from the Puy region and staying in Rossignol, commune of Saint-Jean-Lachalm, is surrounded by a German column from Le Puy. It breaks the siege at the cost of some losses, crosses the Allier in Alleyras and is in Venteuges at night with some wounded. On the eve of the German attack, the defenses of the Venteuges sector are in place, and the roads leading to la Canje are all controlled. Mont-Mouchet is covered on its eastern flank.

On June 10, 2,800 to 3,000 men lined up on the German side: the 2,000 soldiers sent are reinforced by companies from Saint-Flour, Brioude and Puy. Among these reinforcements are the 6 companies of Tartars of the Volga: 3 Azeri companies of Saint Flour and 3 companies of Ukrainian Tartars of du Puy, or 900 men. During the day of June 10, violent clashes occur. In Clavières, where the Germans are stopped by the 3rd, 4th and 9th companies. Their tanks, light armored and auto-machine guns, progress slowly, but the infantry can not follow them. Some vehicles are destroyed by bazookas and automatic weapons. At the Pinols junction, the attack is stopped by the Hoodlums Corps-Franc and the 10th, 11th and 14th companies, destroying several trucks loaded with enemy soldiers. At La Vachellerie (Saugues sector), a hundred vehicles are stopped by the section of gendarmes, the sections of the 33rd and 34th companies, reinforced by elements of the 12th Company. The battle lasted all day, and a night attack with two sections of the 31st Company is needed against the enemy's flank, to repel it on the right bank of the Allier River. Several enemy vehicles are destroyed, including an armored vehicle. Two cannons fall into the hands of the F.F.I. as well as several prisoners. At dusk, the German troops withdraw. The staff of the F.F.I. expect another attack even more violent for the next day; That is why the evacuation of the material begins along the still free road of Paulhac and Le Malzieu, until the "Reduct of La Truyère".

The German attack was resumed on June 11 around 09:00 hours, on the same axis as the previous day. The fight is fierce. The artillery crushes the companies involved and, at the end of the afternoon, the forest house, CP of the Staff. Everywhere, in Clavières, Pinols and Saugues, the Maquisards fight with courage, but they can not avoid the penetration of the enemy. The ammunition is exhausted, and the reserve units provide the necessary supplies. The 26th Company, mainly in the canton of Laroquebrou, suffered great losses: one third of its strength. The companies have orders to stay until the night. Those of Mont-Mouchet retreat towards the "Reduct of La Truyère". Those from Saugues were reduced, the 31st and 32nd companies retired to the forests of the Berbezit region (La Chaise-Dieu) and to the Mercoire forest region (High Lozère) for the 33rd, 34th, 35th companies and the company of passage. When the Germans arrive at the Forestry House very late, they find nothing, neither men nor equipment. During the fierce fighting, the Germans burned and looted the villages of Clavières, Lorcières, Paulhac, part of the small town of Ruynes in Margeride, and all isolated farms on the road, within 10 km around Mont-Mouchet. In some parts, people were shot in the region, including 26 in Ruynes, 13 in Clavières, 11 in Pinols. When they left, their excesses continued, where 25 hostages were shot on June 14 at the Soubizergues bridge in Saint-Flour, while in Murat, on June 12 and 24, 120 people were deported.

The balance of these two days is burdensome. The French losses amount to 160 dead and 80 injured. The Wehrmacht one hundred killed and sixty wounded.

If you follow the link on the bottom of the Gliederung for the Aufkl Abt you'll see that the claim is made for the 24 armoured cars to be a mix of SdKfz 222 and Panhard 178. The Gliederung has them as 18 x 2cm armed cars and 6 x MG armed cars so either none of them were Panhards or they only had MGs in their Panhards which were therefore the radio cars since the number fit with six sections each of three cannon cars and one radio car.

Hello to all :D; more..............................

Sicherungs-Brigade 74.

The struggles of Mont Mouchet. Attack of the second redoubt - June 20 and 21, 1944.

In the "Reduit de La Truyère", 1,500 men meet under the command of Colonel Thomas (Mondange), the redoubt is divided into 14 companies spread over a 35-kilometer circular front. The CP was installed in Fridefont. Since June 12, the strength of the redoubt is reinforced by the companies of Mont-Mouchet, escapes during the night and that settle in the territory of the communes of Fridefont, of Maurines, d'Anterrieux, of Saint-Martial, of Deux Verges and Chaudes-Aigues. The General Staff was installed in Saint-Martial. By June 18, 1944, the force within the redoubt is four thousand men. For a week, weapons and ammunition will be dropped and distributed.

The German attack resumed on June 20 with more violence, combining the convergent action of four combat groups and air support. On that morning in June, 15,000 to 20,000 men (Wehrmacht, SS, Luftwaffe and Militia combined). At Pont-Rouge, on the road to Laguiole, the 8th Company held out for two hours; the Brinat section loses a third of its effective force. Later, in the Bois de Védrines, the rest of the 8th Company supports its defensive action as much as possible, assisted by the Compagnie de l'Aubrac and the Corps-Franc Laurent (Llorca). Part of the German column continues its advance towards Chaudes-Aiguës, which will be occupied at 12:45. In Anterrieux, the battle continues for 8 hours, in a place called "La Barre de Fer". The 7th Company fights heroically and suffers very large losses. From the village of Auriac, the cannons bombard Fridefont on the Cirque du Mallet. The villages of the redoubt, especially Saint-Martial and Anterrieux, as well as the main military targets are pounded with bombs dropped by low-flying planes, and also by bombers, at the end of the afternoon.

Before the violent fire of the artillery, given the general disposition of the forces, Colonel Gaspard resolves to give the order to break off at nightfall. Almost all the members of the F.F.I. break the contact and head north of Truyère (Lavastrie). The others cross the Bès in Albaret-le-Contal, including the Health Service of the Volunteer Commander (Max Menut). Nine people, including six seriously wounded, will be executed near Saint-Just on June 22. The courage and sacrifice of the Maquisards, whose great losses, 260 dead and 180 wounded, hardly surpass those on the German side, have allowed to block two German divisions, at the appropriate time, when they marched to the front of Normandy.

Hello to all :D; more..............................

Sicherungs-Brigade 74.

The concentration of the Auvergne maquis in the Margeride massif.

After many postponements, the plan "Caïman", which was supposed to only have the Central Massif as a theater of operations, and Auvergne as a central bastion, was not taken into account for Operation "Overlord" and was finally abandoned, although later proposals were presented by Colonel Billotte at the headquarters of the theater of operations of the Allied Forces of the Mediterranean, so that the aforementioned plan would be considered in the "Anvil" operation. This plan was rejected partly for logistical reasons (lack of transport aircraft), but mainly for political and military reasons (no recognition of General de Gaulle, exclusion of the French from the preparation of the Allied plans, manifestation of intransigence on the part of the President Roosevelt, who refused to grant an appropriate place to the Committee of National Liberation of France).

Thus, the maquis of the Central Massif were abandoned by the allies, who did not understand the military aid that the concentration of these elements could bring them. This "revolutionary" solution, which at that time was the "Caïman" plan, to which was added the massive participation of the local population in the final action, was undoubtedly a formula too modern at that time for the Allied General Staff, which at that time did not count with the accumulation of sufficient logistical means.

In late June and early July, the FFIs were reconstituted and dispersed in the four departments of Auvergne. There they would continue the struggle until the total liberation of the region. Finally, with the collaboration of the FFI of Limousin, they rejected 22,000 German soldiers and forced them to surrender to the south of the Loire (Bec d'Allier).

Hello to all :D; more..............................

Sicherungs-Brigade 74.

Resistance in Haute-Corrèze.

The landing of June 6, 1944 accelerates the events. The maquis of La Courtine manages to add to its ranks a unit of the Mobile Reserve Groups, a formation of the Vichy Government to maintain order. The Marèges garrison was surrounded by the maquis on June 6, before being released on June 14 by a German column sent from Clermont-Ferrand. The electrical installations and the dam are evacuated without any damage. Finally, on June 10, the German garrison of Ussel massacred 47 maquisards in front of the Higher Primary School. From the beginning of the summer of 1944, the Resistance became militarized and its actions became more rational. Its objectives are the axes of communication and its tactics are the guerrilla. On July 7, the Chavanon ambush marks the beginning of systematic harassment of German troops. The Wehrmacht then launched an operation to destroy the maquis that was commanded by General Jesser.

It is so that on July 9, 1944, the Kampfgruppe Jesser, who comes to operate against the maquis of Auvergne, came to Haute-Corrèze from Murat and St-Flour. These first two columns, for a total of 350 vehicles and AMD 178 Panhart of the 14. Komp (Spah-Komp) were quartered in Eygurande and Bourg-Lastic. Oberst Georg Coqui, Commander of the Sicherungs-Regiment (Mot) 1000, detached on July 10, recce detachments towards Couffy-Courteix, as well as the Messeix mine to obtain contact with the maquis; but these remain hidden because at this time they are totally incapable of competing with regular troops that had a much higher firepower.

From July 10 to 12, a new reconnaissance was made towards Creuse. The Kampfgruppe (Combat Group) A penetrated La Courtine and branched off to St-Oradoux de Chirouze in the direction of Magnat, while the Kampfgruppe B investigated towards the Bourg de Herment, St-Merd-la-Breuille, Giat and Crocq. In San Oradoux de Chirouze was executed Jean-Marie Vergne (farmer of 42 years), Daniel Dufailly (FFI of 22 years belonging to the Corps Franco of Commander Jack) died at the wheel of his car and Mr. Marandon mayor of San Oradoux is arrested as hostage.

On July 13, the Sicherungs-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 1000, under the command of Rittmeister (Captain) Ruby, with 110 vehicles, entered Corrèze and moved to Ussel. The next day, a large motorized formation of this unit (Kamfgruppe C) raked La Courtine Clairvaux area, where a detachment of the 2104th FTP Company falls into an ambush, resulting in 3 dead and 3 prisoners. Meanwhile, other columns explore the plateau of Millevaches, the sector of Gioux and occupy Aubusson on July 15.

On July 14, the so-called slow column from Murat, consisting of the Kamfgruppen D and E, composed of 150 gas-powered vehicles that transport the Legion of Azerbaijan (Azerb-Legion 804) of Hauptmann Lange and the Tatar Legion of the Volga (Wolga-Tatar-Legion) under Rittmeister Siknidef, occupied Ussel and Meymac. Already on July 16, the Kamfgruppe D formed by the Tatar legionaries of the Volga patrolled in the area of Bugeat, Marcy, Peyrelevade and Gentioux. On the 20th, the entire Kampfgruppe Jesser was deployed in Felletin and Aubusson, and since July 17 different columns have crossed the Bourganeuf region.

Sicherungs-Brigade 74.

Resistance in Haute-Corrèze.

From July 13 to 27 the column of the Oberst Georg Coqui unleashed his fury on the Creuse (The Courtine, Felletin, Aubusson, Royère-de Vassivière, Pontarion, Bourganeuf), where he carried out a fierce repression. Repressions in the vicinity of Bourganeuf committed by the Jesser Brigade:

* July 16: Domaine du Mas-Baronnet in Masbaraud-Mérignat, a unit of the CFL is taken prisoner, locked in the Zizim tower then a dozen men are deported to Germany. Captain Kleber is killed at the entrance to Bourganeuf.
* July 16 Vidaillat: attack of the CP of the FFI in the castle of Courson, were captured a few hundred prisoners.
* July 17 Vidaillat: 10 members of the CFL (Corps Francs de la Liberation) die in the village of Cosnat
*July 17: the Kampfgruppe Coqui attacked the Rioublanc 10 km east of Bourganeuf and reportedly killed 5 CFL resistance fighters, and made a significant number of prisoners who were deported. Another version indicates that the Kampfgruppe Coqui attacked the Rioublanc 10 km east of Bourganeuf and reportedly killed 72 resistance fighters, made 32 prisoners and recovered 50 to 60 tons of weapons.
* July 19 at the bois de la Croix de la Mine in Saint-Dizier-Leyrenne, the FFI of Cher are attacked and lose 8 dead and 61 deported.
* July 18-19-20: the Kampfgruppe Coqui carried out a strong reconnaissance in Haute-Vienne and attacked the positions of Colonel Guingouin du Mont Gargan, in the triangle Sussac, Sainte-Anne and Domps.
* On July 20, the German column arrives in Sussac.

From July 26, part of the Column Jesser returns to operate in the Corrèze from Creuse. The formation suffered many ambushes and the tartars of a German company joined the Resistance. The column fell back on Clermont-Ferrand. Its passage is marked by numerous summary executions: 23 resistance fighters killed in Chard; 5 in Saint-Rémy; 4 in Neuvic; 6 on August 1 in Bourg-Lastic.

* July 27: Kampfgruppe Coqui attacked Chard where it killed 6 members of the FFI and took 17 prisoners whom were shot.
* July 27: a few kilometers from Saint-Rémy (19) a group of the Column Jesser falls into an ambush losing 2 trucks and 16 to 17 dead against no loss of the 2nd Company of the AS (Armée Secrète).

Hello to all :D; more..............................

Sicherungs-Brigade 74.

Resistance in Haute-Corrèze.

* On the night of July 29/30, 75 Tatars desert the German forces and join the Resistance fighters of the Secret Army. The Tartars took part in the ambushes of the end of August in the RN 89. But in front of their disgust to this type of fight, they were put in reserve. After the liberation of the Haute-Corrèze, they regrouped in Tulle. Nobody knows what happened later with them.

* July 30: after the desertion of the Tartars, the Germans evacuated Meymac and Saint-Angel and deployed the Tartar legion eastward to avoid contagion. The convoy of 60 vehicles passed through Ussel, Eygurande where it fell, 2 km further, in an ambush. The FFI had 1 injured, the Germans lost 1 truck, 1 bus and around 40 dead and wounded. The Tatar legion is transported by Rochefort, Issoire, Le Puy-en Velay and Saint-Etienne, where it arrives on 4 August. She will not go back to Corrèze anymore.

*July 31: German forces carried out a new cleaning operation. The columns are reported in Meymac, Ambrugeat, Celestine of Égletons, Saint-Angel, Combressol, La Chapelle-de-Combressol, Palisse, Lamaziere-Basse, Neuvic. Near Neuvic a section of 4 resistant of the FTP MOI (Francs-tireurs et partisans - main-d'œuvre immigrée) armed 2 with pistols, 1 with machine gun and 1 unarmed are surprised by a German section, succumbing under the number, the 4 resistant die, but the Germans suffered 2 dead and 1 injured.

* August 1: in the face of the confrontations and operations of the guerrilla that multiplied, the Germans, thinking of finding a "terrorist division", decided to go back to Auvergne. All of Jesser's troops, Azerbaijan legion, the few remaining Tatars, SS and SIPO-SD leave Ussel towards Clermont-Ferrand. 12 vehicles left Ussel followed 2 hours later by the rest of the Jesser Grouping (64 vehicles including 4 howitzers and 3 anti-tank guns). This convoy is assaulted on the Chavanon bridge and lost there in 5 to 6 minutes 3 vehicles and about 15 men. The FFI did not suffer losses. At night in Bourg-Lastic, the Azerbaijani legion killed 6 people with machine-gun fire.

The guerrillas are now fighting in broad daylight. The release of weapons by parachute multiplied. The ambushes became generalized. At the beginning of August, a German unit from the Languedoc was attacked without rest and had to lock up in the National Professional School of Égletons. At each patrol outing, they fell under the fire of the Resistance: August 5 on the road to Lamazière; the 8, in Soudeilles; the 9 in Rosiers d'Égletons.

As a balance of the period we can say that:

* During the first period, from 1 to 15 July, the troops from the Jesser column operated in Haute-Corrèze on the Ussel-Eygurande axis and sought contact with the FFIs. In this a complete failure was recorded, finding the void in front of them. In fact, the FFIs of the region, in accordance with the instructions of Commander Duret, rejected the fight.

* In a second period, from July 14 to 26, they went to Creuse and Haute-Vienne and based in Aubusson and Bourganeuf, they got in touch with the FFIs and were able to attack them. The Germans succeeded in dispersing armed concentrations and destroying some of their material. The organizaion of the South Creuse explodes, but the numbers were not too big.

* The third period, from July 27 to August 1, shows the participation of the Jesser Brigade in two groups:

o The North group, formed by the rapid column, continues the cleaning operations to the east along the RN 141 until reaching Clermont-Ferrand.
o The South group based in Meymac and Ussel continues its cleaning operations
o FFIs cause heavy losses in multiple ambushes.
o The desertion of a Tartar group undermines morale and increases the difficulties of the German command.
o This group retreated in a hurry on the Puy-de-Dôme .............
