Wegierska Gorka 1939.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all folks. I'm wondering if someone here could light me up about the 7 ID fights from Jablunka pass to Wegierska Gorka during the start of Fall Weiss. Also I'm trying to find out the officers roll (down to company commanders, if possible) for the IR 62 and IR 19. TIA. Best regards. Tigre.

Hello Pirx and thank you; I'm looking for an account from the 7 ID point of view (and maps if there is any). By the way, quoting from the article:
By the end of the day the Poles claimed 8 enemy armoured personnel carriers (APCs) and tanks, while the Germans were forced back to their initial positions between Milówka and Węgierska Górka
.

May be the division's AA had APCs (however it had one reiter and one radfahr squadron) but tanks? How could be possible? has anyone the AA OOB on hand?. Cheers. Tigre.

Yeah.
In Polish sites there was no sign of tanks, only "7 or 8 vehicles".

Hello to all :D; after a while here goes something more......................

The fortified position "Węgierska Górka" 01 to September 3, 1939.

On the Polish side, despite the orders of the Commander of the Army "Cracow" to accelerate the work to fortify the area the plan failed due to the short time and technical difficulties, for that reason in late August 1939, only four forts were built in the fortified line of Węgierska Górka: "Wędrowiec" (kpt.Tadeusz Semik), "Waligora" (por. Leopold Golacz), "Wąwóz" (ppor. Antoni Chludziński) and "Włóczęga" (ppor. Marian Malkowski). Other troops defending the area comprised the 2. Pułk Strzelców Górskich (rifle mountain regiment), Battalion KOP "Berezwecz", National Defense Battalion (Obrony Narodowej) "Zywiec" and the 151. Mountain Artillery Battery. The forts itself were occupied by the Fortress Company No. 151 under the command of kpt. T. Semik.

While on the German side the 7. ID was deployed in Slovakia since August 1, 1939, as part of the XVII AK together with the 44. ID and 45. ID; the Army Corps had the cover name of Staff of Labour XX (Arbeitstab XX).

Hello to all :D; more follows......................

The fortified position "Węgierska Górka" 01 to September 3, 1939.

An Oberleutnant of 7. ID recalled about it: the regiment marched on the night of August 31 to September 1, 1939 from the Western Beskids toward the international border with Poland. My company was bivouacking in a Slovakian town near the border, when we received the alarm in the night to September 1, 1939. For the company it was clear that after the political delays, the attack against Poland was about to begin. The subunit was assembled at short notice, the vehicles were loaded, and ammunition were distributed, soon the Hauptmann was informed that the company was ready to go. The Company Leader said that by order of the Führer we should attack and destroy the Polish army, and he added: I hope that each of you do your duty. Come on with God. Company march!............. After those words the stillness of the night was broken by the movement of the company that went into battle formation towards the march's road of the regiment.

The fortified position "Węgierska Górka" 01 to September 3, 1939.

On September 1, 1939 the 7. ID crossed the Polish border by Skalite towards Zwardon Pass (IR 61) and by Cadca towards Jablunka Pass (IR 62); the IR 19 was in reserve behind the IR 61. The II. / IR 62 (Oberstleutnant Streil) assailed the Jablunka Pass while the I. / IR 62 fought for the Height 639 (Girovahöhe).

The fortified position "Węgierska Górka" 01 to September 3, 1939.

The next day, September 02, 1939 at 11:00 hours the 7. ID was detained a few hours in Milowka and then its troops approached to Wegierka Gorka. With the IR 62 (Generalmajor Lang) now as reserve, the IR 19 and the IR 61 stormed the heights of Barania (Barania-Höhe) and in the afternoon reached the fortified line of Wergieska Gorka east of Zywiec; here the IR 19 suffered the first casualties.

Around 14:00 hours ensued artillery duel, by the Polish side came into fight the mountain battery of kpt. Dunilla-Żuchowski and the III. / 65 pal of kpt. J. Podczaski. After two hours of fire of preparation the Germans assaulted the position but the defensive fire sowed chaos in the columns of the enemy vanguard and the attack was repulsed.

However attackers quickly regrouped supported by artillery fire from AR 7 and AR 109, then assault groups were organized to conquer the forts one by one. Around 19:00 hours, płk Gaładyk ordered the withdrawal of the forward positions to the main line of defense.

The crews of the forts of Waligora, Włoczęga and Wąwoz retreated in the afternoon. The fortress of Wędrowiec continued its resistance until September 03, 1939 when ceased the fighting due to the tiredness, lack of water and ammunition.

The Oberleutnant recalled: on September 3, 1939 at noon and after two and a half days of fighting, Polish border troops were destroyed and the fortified position was finally broken, and thus began the persecution of the Polish army.

While in these early days of the war the enemy imposed the law of exchange to the German infantry (space vs. time), in the following days the German advance continued with a relentless pace, pursuing the enemy on his heels until their total destruction.
