A little bit of idiomatic German

Post by Richard Hargreaves »

Which I can't quite crack :(
Und unsere Truppen haben nicht mehr den Schneid und den Elan wie 39, 40 und auch noch 41. Sie sind willig, diszipliniert, aber der so unbedingte Glaube hat doch einen Knacks bekommen. Wo soll das noch hinführen?
Which I've had a stab at:

And our troops no longer have the guts and the élan as in 39, 40 or even 41. They are willing, disciplined, but those who have unconditional faith have got a screw loose [?]. Where will it all lead? :[]

I think the word crack also could be used in the translation 8)

but the so unconditional faith have gotten a crack.
Or perhapes "gotten a blow". The faith is cracking up....

Aha! :D

Something like "even those with unconditional faith have suffered a blow"?

I ran this by a German friend of mine, and his translation came out like this:
And our troups don't have the courage anymore as in 39,40 and 41,too.
They have the will, have discipline, but their uncoditional faith has got a "crack" .
Where will this lead to?
Just to add another voice into it :D

Hi,

here's my two eurocents to add

And our troops don't have the spirit and élan any more like they had in '39, '40 or even '41. They are willing, disciplined, but the belief, which is so absolutely necessary, has taken a battering. Where will it all lead?

HTH
