With the 11 DI (French): On Aug 22 1939 the 30º BCP (Bataillon Chasseur a Pied) mobilized its echelon "A". The battalion should be lodged at Sarre-Union: HQ, Supply Coy and 2. Coy at Harskirchen; 1. Coy at Bissert and 3. Coy at Villeneuve. On Aug 31 1939, was raised the echelon "B" (mobilized on Aug 25 1939) being detrained at Sarre-Union. On Sep 02 1939 General Mobilization. The 15 GRCA (XX CA) was deployed as Advanced Guard covering the borderline beyond the 170 RI; It was mantaining the liaison with the 4 DINA and the V CA (Sarre).
With the 71 ID (German): On Aug 26 1939 was organized the Pi Btl 171 at Holzminder/Weser. On Aug 27 1939 Officers and Enlisted Men's arrival. On Aug 29 1939 at 23:00 hours the battalion was transported by train from Holzminden to the west. On Aug 30 1939 arrival at Schopp then marched towards Pirmasens. During the night from Aug 31 to Sep 01 1939 it was known that the German attack on Poland would begin at 04:45 hours. The battalion was alarmed taking in account a French attack. Its 3 companies should start the obstacles' plan in the morning; 1. Coy with the regiment on the right, 2. Coy with the regiment in the center and 3. Coy with the regiment on the left. It was expected the attack on the right.

With the 11 DI (French): during the night from 07 to 08 Sep 1939, the 30 BCP was shifted to bois du Spitzwald south of Ippling and was deployed there facing northeast.
With the 71 ID (German): the 1./ Pi Btl 171 working in the main sector of the Division should install 3.000 T-mines. For that task each company should attach one platoon from 14:00 hours onwards. Around 18:00 hours, Uffz d.R. Söhlmann (1. Company) was severely wounded in a mine accident.

OKH report from 20.09.1939 says that:
"(...) French infantry demonstrate only limited willingness for offensive actions, they occupy their attack positions carelessly and [sometimes] fall into the fire of their own artillery; on the other hand they skilfully use terrain and camouflage themselves; they shoot poorly. (...)"
