Hello to all :D; something more about the Campaign in Poland in September of 1939..........

The conquest of Grudziadz/Graudenz - From 01 till 04 Sep 1939.

Background.

The tension was growing up over East Prussia in that July of 1939. During the diplomatic negotiations between the German and the Polish goverments the armies of Poland were getting gradually ready. On August 21 1939, the 21 ID (Generalleutnant von Both) became under XXI AK (Generalleutnant von Falkenhorst) which in turn was in the framework of the 3 AOK (General der Artillerie von Küchler) under H.Gr. North (Generaloberst von Bock); it was deployed in the Marienwerder area and supply depots were established well camouflaged deep within the forests.

In the meantime also Polish troops were deployed along the border. Here was deployed the Independent Group “Grudziadz” under plk Stefan Cieslak made up of the III. /65 pp (Maj Artur Guder); Battalion ON “Swiecie” (Maj Dobrzànski) and 3 Group 16 pal.

Hello to all :D; something more about the Campaign in Poland in September of 1939..........

The conquest of Grudziadz/Graudenz - From 01 till 04 Sep 1939.

Background.

The II. Abteilung (group) of the AR 57 consisted of: Commando and General Staff, Nachrichtenzug (Signal Platoon), topographic Group, a battery with guns of 100 mm, two batteries with heavy howitzers of 150 mm and three light columns of 24 tons;

In August of 1939 the Group moved to the area of Pomehrendorf, approximately 11 km to the east of Elblag. Here, the equipment was completed and it trained the replacements. For the 21 of August, the Group received the order to move to Mortung, 3 km to south-east of Alt-Christburg, occupying an assembly area. The Group integrated the Artillerie-Regiments-Stab z.b.V. 511 within the XXI AK subordinated of the 3 AOK.

On August 23 of 1939, the Group was mobilized still more near the border with Poland and the attack was planned for the 26 of August 1939. The 25 of August 1939 reached to the Group, the order to return immediately of the firing position in the zones of concentration, the attack was cancelled.

and a little more...

[September 2nd 1939]

The enemy also offered determined resistance to 24 Infanterie Regiment, now advancing westwards, but the most bitter resistance was probably in the face of 45 Infanterie Regiment attacking Grabowitz. At first light it had already tried to dislodge the enemy standing in front of it, taking advantage of the heavy ground fog and strong artillery support. "After just a few minutes the heavy raking fire of the machine-guns and rifles and the bursting of grenades and mortars and enemy artillery forced us to take cover; we could only advance in individual leaps and bounds," reported Karlheinz Herzberg, a Gruppe leader in I/IR45. "Medics here, medics there. 'Medics', 'mother', 'mama', 'help', these cries were drowned out by commands and orders. In the haze an olive-green helmet appeared sporadically and then vanished. In the bright morning after gaining a few hundred metres of ground the order to dig in arrived. We lay in the middle of the enemy's barrage."
[Allmayer-Beck, Christoph Freihher von, Die Geschichte der 21 (ostpr/westpr) Infanterie Division, Schild Verlag, Munich, 1990, p.31]

and also

The Abteilung has been in two completely different parts of Poland. The assault on Graudenz passed through historic German territory with many German inhabitants. When German troops invaded the populace fled and were displaced. Farms stood empty, cattle and fowl ran around without their masters. Most German properties had been burned down by the Poles, so that everywhere we ran into heaps of rubble and in the distance we saw the glow of burning farms. Those Polish inhabitants still present were shy, reserved and create the impression of being devious.
During our second march into Poland the abteilung moved through solely Polish territory. The people were hideously dirty and depraved. The towns were predominantly inhabited by Jews. The farms and larger towns consisted of extremely poor cottages of which only the stoves and chimneys were made of stone. During our advance via Zambrow the Russian influence was obvious. The populace were clean and also approachable. The churches were built along Russian lines, the houses were large and more solid. The inhabitants had once been under Russian rule and did not particularly like the Polish Government. The Jews immediately began to deal with German soldiers and declared that they would very much welcome German rule. In some cases we even came across Jews who had emigrated from Germany just a few years ago. In some cases the old men had served as Russian soldiers in the World War and knew Germany from their time in captivity.
[Our Signals Abteilung in the Polish Campaign by Major Hannes Wolff, Kommandeur Nachrichten Abteilung 21 (killed in 1942, pp.14-15 in BA-MA RH26-21/223 Tapfer und Treue: Erlebnisberichte, Aufzeichnungen aus den Kriegsjahren, 21 ostpr-westpr Infanterie Division]

and

Order of the Day by Bock’s Army Group, September 7th 1939

The battle in West Prussia is over! Protected by the attack of the East Prussian corps and decisively supported by the rapid capture of fortress Graudenz, the army attacking the Corridor from Pomerania has marched through it in two days and dealt the enemy holding it a devastating blow. Up to now more than 10,000 prisoners, 90 guns and numerous pieces of military equipment have been reported captured and the numbers are still growing. The enemy has also suffered heavy, bloody losses. Border guards, Landwehr and youthful troops have been involved in this success – particularly East Prussians – as well as the Luftwaffe. Achievements in battle and on the march are outstanding.
Proud of the deeds of my troops, I give all of you, from the most senior commander to the youngest soldier, my thanks and most fulsome praise.
So onwards! Long live Germany! Long live the Führer!
– Von Bock

Hello to all :D; thanks Richard for that complement. Now something more about the Campaign in Poland in September of 1939..........

The conquest of Grudziadz/Graudenz - From 01 till 04 Sep 1939.

Fall Weiss. 01 Sep 1939.

XXI AK’s KTB:

After the failure of the diplomatic negotiations the attack’s order for the German troops was set.

At 04:45 hours the attack went under way and the troops got across the border line without enemy reaction. There was low fog during the morning which was lifting by 07:00 hours. In order to achieve surprise the artillery fires on the enemy rear opened up at 05:30 hours on Bhf. Goßlershausen, Schwetz and barracks Graudenz. By 13:00 hours the Ossa was reached against weak resistance at Sakrau (AA 21) – Klodtken and the mill Slupp.

The resistance stiffened the attack was resumed in the afternoon and by nightfall had reached the following line:

21 ID: Sakrau (AA 21) – northern bank of the Ossa at Klodtken – Point 88 (2 km southeast Klodtken) – Kgl Dombrowken – Sallno – Sallnoer lake – Orla forest.

228 ID: Orla forest – south edge Szczepanken – Bogdanken. The attack carried out by the 228 ID was supported by the I./ PR 10 all day long. In order to seize this significant point still this very day, the panzerabteilung should cross the Ossa at Schloss Roggenhausen towards Orla in order to open the mill Slupp from the south. The tank attack reached Slupp, however the IR 325 could not reach Slupp from the north.

Fall Weiss. 01 Sep 1939.

A young witness recalled: At five o’clock on the morning of September 1st 1939 the whole family tumbled out of bed at the sound of tremendous gun-fire. We lived in Garnsee in East Prussia, about five miles from the Polish border: the war had begun. I was fourteen.

Straight away, on that day, the first casualties, wounded and dead, were brought back to the village. One of the dead was our relatively new school teacher, a man in his twenties, who had brought a welcome breath of fresh air into school; most of the teachers were elderly.

Losses for the first day for the XXI AK:

KIA: 1 Off., 42 NCOs and men.
WIA: 6. Off, 135 NCOs and men.
MIA: 1 Off, 4 men.

Hello to all :D; something more about the Campaign in Poland in September of 1939..........

The conquest of Grudziadz/Graudenz - From 01 till 04 Sep 1939.

Fall Weiss. 01 Sep 1939.

With the 21 ID:

On August 20 of 1939, the regiment left its garrison and then went to the border with Poland. The unit lodged to the west of Freystadt. On August 25 of 1939, the IR 3 was alarmed and it moved towards the borderline. During the night of August 26 of 1939, the regiment received the order to stop the march and then to move back to its assembly area. In night from August 31 to September 01 of 1939 the regiment marched again towards the international limit and this time there was no counter-order.

On the morning of 01 September 1939 at 04:45 hours, through the fog, the Infantry Regiments belonging to the 21 ID and supporting by the AR 21’s groups jumped off from the Gaarnsee; eastward of it – as a flank protection – was deployed the 228 ID.

The attack’s objective was Graudenz with its fortress Courbiere. The IR 24 (Oberst Sponheimer) employed in the center advanced up to the Ossa at Schloss Roggenhausen could take nearly intact and established a strong bridgehead there. The IR 45 (Oberst v. Behr) located to the right, found strong defensive positions south of Schloss Roggenhausen and fought its way up to the Ossa River however could not get across of it. The IR 3 (Oberst v. Reibnitz) had reached already in the morning the assigned sector on the Ossa River but there the resistance stiffened and saw itself engaged in heavy fights within the forest. Own tanks (I./ PR 10) with peace garrison at Zinten (East Prussia) crossed the Ossa river at Schloss Roggenhausen heading to Orla in order to win and clear the river’s south bank before the IR 3, which could get across only one of its battalions. During the night (01 to 02 Sep 1939) all parts of the Division were brought to the south river bank over the bridge located at Schloss Roggenhausen.

Whereas the II. /AR 57 occupied their firing position again on August 31 1939. On Sep 01 1939 at the 04:45 hours the Artillery battalion unleashed the planned barrages on the positions already recognized on the border. To mid-morning it realised a shift of position in the direction of the northeast of Schloss Roggenhausen (Rogozno). Here, the Group had its two first wounded ones. On the Ossa River the Group furnished fire support while the IR 45 went across the water obstacle. In the evening shot harassment fire executed on the localities of Melno, Schwetz, Nitzwalde and Brutta.

At 10:00 hours took place the first serious confrontations in the zone of Łasina and Rogóźna and shortly after the Polish battalions began to retreat but around 19:00 hours the German advance was stopped. General Boltuc ordered to the 4 DP to leave weak forces in the zone of Jablonowo (I./ 14 pp) and to move to the region of Melno.

Hello to all :D; something more ..........

The conquest of Grudziadz/Graudenz - From 01 till 04 Sep 1939.

Fall Weiss. 02 Sep 1939

On Sep 02 1939 at 06:00 o’clock the IR 3 should begin its attack heading eastwards (towards Orla) on the enemy’s flank. Due to the dense fog, the assault’s time was shifted again and again; it began finally at 09:00 hours being successful however. The 21 ID’s mass jumped off at 10:00 hours heading west but was halted due to heavy enemy fire. Nevertheless, the new X-time did not reach the I./ IR 24 so its attack went under way at 08:00 hours and without artillery support it could seize the center and the cemetery of Kgl. Dombrowken; however due to own artillery fire within the village, the battalion should leave the town which was finally taken afterwards.

In the afternoon, the IR 24 moved further ahead in the direction of the Pfaffenberg. With tank and aerial support it could break into the enemy positions at Grabowitz and Ellernitz. The flank’s security were provided by the IR 3, the AA 21, the Pz Abw Abt 21 and parts of the Pi Btl 21 covering towards south and southwest. These forces could reject several raids accomplished by a weak enemy during the night as well as one powerful polish counterattack on Nitzwalde next day (II./ 65 pp reinforced with artillery).

On Sept 02 of 1939, the II. /AR 57 got across the Ossa River at noon. During afternoon fired on Graudenz and the Fort of Courbiere.

After violent combats the 16 DP was compelled to retreat on the heights that dominate the railroad Grudziazdz - Brodnica. In the evening General Boltuc ordered the Commander of the 4 DP to reject the enemy of the Ossa River while the 16 DP and the 14 pp had to solidly maintain the railroad. But the Commander of the 16 DP did not manage to control itself and ordered the withdrawal of his division and the 14 pp to Radzyn. The counterattack was delayed and began just at dusk. The Germans were rejected from the railroad but they stayed to the south of the river.

The Genral Boltuc decided then:

To stop the retreat of the 16 DP.
To dismiss the Commander of the 4 DP (plk Switalski by plk Szyszko-Bohusz).
To continue the counterattack on the following day

Hello to all :D; something more ..........

The conquest of Grudziadz/Graudenz - From 01 till 04 Sep 1939.

Fall Weiss. 03 Sep 1939

On Sep 03 1939 after strong artillery preparation, the attack carried out by the 21 ID continued. Elements belonging to the IR 24 and IR 45 supported by tanks (I./ PR 10) could advance, going into the town’s centre of Graudenz; however they were taken back during the night in order to avoid losses in the darkness. On the other hand, the division could push parts of the IR 3 and IR 24 in order to isolate the city from the south. Along that defensive line the I. and II./ IR 3 rejected a strong Polish outbreak attempt. In the meantime, tank forces belonging to 4 AOK had appeared on the Weichsel’s west bank before Graudenz (it was in fact the Guderian’s XIX AK Mot). The bridge was then blown up and Poland took off the mass of their troops to the south.

After the fall of Graudenz on September 03 of 1939, the Artillery battalion (II./ AR 57) was displaced to occupy new positions in the neighborhood of Gehlenburg in the south of Eastern Prusia.

On September 03 of 1939, in the morning, the adversary (German) reassumed the offensive and the 4 DP could stay with great difficulty in their positions. The contact between the Army Corps Boltuc and the garrison of Grudziadz was cut and this last one was surrounded.

Plk Cieslak received the order to fall back towards the south with his troops; in the course of the fights the Commander of Battalion ON “Swiecie”, Maj Dobrzànski and the Chief of the 7./16 pal Kpt Majewski, fell in action.

Hello to all :D; last part..........

The conquest of Grudziadz/Graudenz - From 01 till 04 Sep 1939.

Fall Weiss. 04 Sep 1939

September 04 of 1939 and without substantial resistance of mention, the fortress of Courbiere fell into the hands of IR 45. Oberst v. Behr received the unconditional surrender in the city council of Graudenz. The mass of the division meanwhile had began the pursuit of the enemy in south direction towards Briesen. In the evening - to the north of Rheden – the Division received the message by which the unit had to be concentrated itself in the zone of Garnsee for being used elsewhere of the front. The first battle mission had been fulfilled.

In this day the Polish garrison of Grudziadz which managed to break through the encirclement, took contact with the troops of the 4 DP.

Hello to all :D; a little complement..........

"Heim ins Reich" - Graudenz 1939.
