Hello to all :D; the Westfeldzug...................

With the 3 Pz in France 1940.

Before the campaign several changes in the chain of command had been taken place within the Division; Generalleutnant Geyr v. Schweppenburg handed over the command to Generalmajor Stumpf (ex- Commander of the 3 Pz Brigade), the new Commander of the 3 Pz Brigade was Oberst Kühn (ex- Commander of the School of Armored Troops - Panzertruppenchule) and Oberst Frhr v. Funck assumed as Commander of PR 5.

The Case Yellow - Fall Gelb.

The 3 Pz, together with the 4 Pz and the 20 ID (Mot), was within the framework of the XVI AK (Mot) under General der Kavallerie Hoepner, part of the 6 AOK under Generaloberst v. Reichenau which depended in turn of the Army Group B under Generaloberst v. Bock.

The task of the 3 Pz was to get across the Mosa River and then to cross the Albert Canal to the west of the city of Maastricht heading in the general direction of Brussels; for that reason, it was reinforced with the MG Btl 7, the II. /Flak Lehr Regiment and the II. /AR 49.

Hello to all ; the Westfeldzug...................

With the 3 Pz in France 1940.

12 of May of 1940.

At dusk in front of Hannut, first skirmishes of the advance guards with enemy forces.

13 of May of 1940.

On this day was developed the first great combat between armored forces of WW II between the divisions with garrisons in the capital cities of Germany and France; the 3 Pz of Berlin against the 3 DLM of Paris. The 3 Pz Brigade advanced at 12:30 hours as advanced guard; the PR 5 was reinforced with antitank troops (Pz Jäg). At 13:00 hours the high grounds on the Gette were reached. The PR 5 fought against an enemy antitank front and around 14:30 hours it crossed the Gette by an improvised bridge.

On the south French tanks attacked the brigade’s left flank and towards the northwest on Orp-Le-Grand, the right flank. The vehicles Pz KW I and II were stopped but the Pz KW III and IV continued the fighting against that enemy. The German tanks deployed in companies and sections establishing fronts with great speed of fire. Around 16:00 hours the PR 5 and PR 6 continued the advance towards the west with the fire support of AR 75 and the II. /AR 49. During the night from 13 to 14 of May of 1940 the PR 5 was assembled south of Orp-Le-Grand. The 3 DLM lost about 30 tanks type “Somua” and 70 tanks type “Hotchkiss”. The 6 AOK’s order for the following day was to continue the attack against Nivelles.
