Canadian divisional markings

Post by Paulus II »

Hi all,

Currently I'm making a map of the D-Day landings and, instead of the usual tactical signs and unit names and numbers, I am adding the markings/emblems of all divisions and brigades involved.

Looking at the divisional markings of the canadian infantry divisions I noticed that sometimes the marking is just a plain rectangle in the appropriate colour for the division (a blue/greenish hue for the 3rd Canadian infantry division in this instance) while in other pictures there is a gold (maple?) leaf in the rectangle.

Is this difference meant to show different units within the divisions, a change of standard markings that happened at some time, hasty paintjobs leaving out the leaf or is it "just one of those things"??

Thanks in advance and best regards,

Paul

Might be of some help...
Unit sign - Identified a unit within a formation (e.g. 61 on green rectangle was
Seaforth Highlanders of Canada IF the formation sign was 1 Cdn Infantry Division.)
Formation sign - This was usually a symbol for a division, corps or army.
(e.g. 1 Canadian Infantry Division was a gold maple leaf on a signal red rectangle.)
