Any German Ship in History!

Post by Commissar D, the Evil »

Now Folks, just if and I mean if you were chosen to command any German warship in history, which would it be and why????

(Why do I feel that Prinz Eugen will be the out and out favorite......   )

Prinz Eugen??? Who would dream of a ship which ended up as floating target for the enemy...

Emden was a fine ship! Too bad her armament was too light to fight Sidney.

But, even in her sacrifice, she created a legend. You have to admire the "lone raider" types in both wars and she certainly did a lot of damage before her demise--two warships sunk and a number of merchant ships--she was a fine ship!

Well Gentlemen, for me there is only one ship... The Bismarck!

This was my first favorite ship to read about as a kid back in the seventies. The world's greatest, most powerful and modern Battleship, the sinking of HMS Hood and the near-crippling of the HMS Prince of Wales, the final hunt for the Bismarck and the Götterdämmerung with only 115 survivors... And yes, I build the Airfix model in scale 1:600... twice!

The photograph below is taken from a highly recommended website with tons of information on the Bismarck: http://www.kbismarck.com/

Hi Guys,

Ever since reading James F. Tent’s superb book E-Boat Alert, I’ve thought that taking command of a small, fast and rather daring Schnell-boote would have been quite an adventure.

I know they aren’t actually warships and they don’t have the historical grandeur and importance of ships like the Bismarck, Graf Spee and Prinz Eugen but it must have been incredibly adrenaline fuelled (not to mention highly dangerous) dashing around the channel in an S-boot duelling with the inferior British MGB’s and MTB’s and making daring hit and run raids. They were a real menace to the Allies in the lead up to D-Day.

Regards,

André

Well Andre', on AHF, I claimed that the WWII Schnelleboot was the single most efficient design of warship in that era, so you will certainly receive my support!!!!

I love S.M.S. Seydlitz, but that was a different war....

Hello again Gentlemen!

The only German ship that I've actually been onboard (twice! :D ) is the great four-masted sailing ship "Padua", build in Bremershaven in 1926. Handed over to the russians after WWII, she is now very well known as the "Kruzenshtern" and have participated in many Tall Ship races over the last 30 years. See photo sourcelink for an introductionary article...

I haven't found much information (at all) about the "Padua" during WWII, except for some minor (very unflattering) details...
1943 wurde die Padua mit einer Kanone ausgestattet. Damit schoss sie unter deutscher Flagge ein deutsches Flugzeug ab, außerdem rammte sie ein deutsches U-Boot.

Apparently she did see some "combat"... :? Still, a truly wonderful ship from a long gone era! :D

I am going for the Kormoran. Long voyage all over the place, and a lot of action. Good chance of survival after sinking.

Refreshing the discussion: I'd choose battlecruiser(battleship) Scharnhorst, one of the Terrible Twins! Not so many capships even turned their guns against enemy aircraft carriers, and Scharnhorst even send one to the bottom of the sea.
