Looking for book on stateside America during WWII...

Post by L. Kafka »

I am looking for a book that gives a sociological type look at life stateside. I have read articles but would like to read something more in depth. Paul Fussell covered World War One in this respect with his "War and Modern Memory." My impression is that "stateside" Americans during WWII were rather detached and not as emotionally or intellectually connected to the far away war as the American media make often makes it out to be. This impression of mine comes from speaking with numerous people who lived as adult or teenagers in America during the war.
"What are they going to do, send me to Vietnam?"
A oft heard GI refrain in Vietnam in '68.
