Strange Luftwaffe rank title

Post by PaulR »

I have a Luftwaffe tunic ranked to an Oberst that is named. The strange thing is that the rank named on the tag is "Assessor". The tag and insignia is unquestionably original to the tunic.

I know what the word translates to directly(Tester, one who assesses, etc), but how what job description would this give this man this title in the Luftwaffe. Now, bear in mind that the tag is dated 1939, so he has most likely been promoted a few times(he might not have been an Oberst when the tunic was made originally).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul,

Possibly a government official (civilian) with an equivalent military rank. I know many meteorologist aircrew (Met-Beobachter) fall into this category.

Regierungsassessor (Reg.Ass.) is equivalent to Hptm as is Wetterdienst Assessor (Wd.Ass.)

Thank you Andy. I found this tag on a General Staff tunic. Has anyone ever heard of an official being brought into the General Staff?
