I once did an analysis of the rapiers in the Wallace collection. The early ones at least tended to be about the same length and weight as hand and a half swords. Many also had a pomel designed for use with a second hand. Implication is either parrying very hard blows or delivering hard slashing blows or both. Yes, they were just an extrapolation of the late Medieval "arming sword" along the same line of evolution that the original broadsword had taken - longer blade, and designed for more grip and thus force...but also retaining the arming sword's diamond section (no fuller) blade section and long-taper point. But AS they got longer and heavier, they became more and more a primary weapon rather than the arming sword's "second side-arm" role, so had to be capable of parrying etc.
