Has anyone ever identified the pilot/pilots involved in the attack upon Rommel's staff car in Normandy that resulted in his serious injuries and convalesent leave home. I believe that there were two Brit Spitfires involved, has their unit ,or pilots, been identified?
A canadian Spitfire pilot has been identified, namely Charles (Charly) W. Fox of the Royal Canadian Airforce's 412 Squadron. Flight Lieutenant Fox also recieved the Distinguished Flying Cross with Bar for being an "ace" air-to-ground attack pilot, having destoyed over 150 vehicles. See link for more information:
I have always wondered if the pilot was ever made aware of his target on that fateful day. Surprised to learn it was a Canadian, but hey, they were in the thick of the fight too! Sounds like Fox was one tough customer as ground attack was a very dangerous task. Again, thanks
Vielen Dank Ferr Doktor, much appreciated. Must have been terrible to have those Jabos bearing down on you like that. A feeking of helplessness does not adequately describe it.
