The only good books are in German.

Roland Kaltenegger Stammdivision Der Deutschen Gebirgstruppe: Weg Und Kampf Der 1. Gebirgs-Division 1935-1945 is the standard work, but it's not one of his best books. His history of 4 Geb Div is far superior.

Kaltenegger is Mr Gebirgsjager and has written a good dozen books on the subject, including a general history (Die Gebirgstruppe) which is rather hit and miss, as most general histories tend to be.

You may want to try the book "Blutiges Edelweiß" by Hermann Fr. Meyer

James Lucas had a book published some years ago called Hitler's Mountain Troops that gave a history of the Gebirgsjager and covered the various divisions individually. The paperback version can still be found on amazon for £1.99.

Thanks for the heads-up on that. I'll definitely be investing in it. I'm a bit of a GBJ buff.

Gebirgsjäger, German Mountain Infantry (6518)
by Gordon Rottman & Stephen Andrew ISBN 962-361-137-4
52 Pages, 148 photos, 4 Color Plates

Noticed this on JFF's site a few months ago. Dunno if its any good, appears to be more a photo album than a history.

Might be of interest

Lucas is a basic introduction; okay, but you'll find yourself wanting more.

There's also an Osprey by Gordon Williamson; useful for equipment, uniform etc, but don't expect anything in-depth.

I'm sure one of Kaltenegger's books, a picture book I think, has been translated into English.

Grüß Di' Bergkameraden,

If you can find a copy, you can't go wrong with Hubert Lanz's (commander of 1.GJD) 1954 book "Gebirgsjäger: Die 1. Gebirgsdivision 1935-1945."

Here are a few others:

"Hubert Lanz: General der Gebirgstruppe 1896-1982" by Charles B. Burdick

"Michl Pössinger: Lebensbilder eines Gebirgsjägers" by Josef Bader

"Jugend im Krieg: Kriegstagebuch 1940-1945" by Werner Jacobi

"Unternehmen 'Elbrus' Das kaukasische Abenteuer 1942" by Josef Martin Bauer

"Gebirgsjäger im Kaukasus: Die Operation 'Edelweiß' 1942/43" by Roland Kaltenegger

Berg Heil!
Mit einem Kameradschaftlichen Horrido!

Patrick
