Hansen is a big man, and being old school SS Hansen is too proud and brave to take cover much : he will inevitably attract the worst of the soviet fire.
But "lucky charm" may be better translated as "mascot".
PS . You know MH, if the commissar doesn't terminate both characters, I can envisage a post-WWII French Foreign Legion / Dien Bien Phu future for them.
