Number of Hummels Produced
A total of 714 Hummels were produced with 368 being produced in 1943, 289 produced in 1944 and 57 produced in 1945. There were also 10 more produced by conversion of exiting chassis bringint the total to 724 Hummels with the 15cm sFH18/1.
In addition to the gun totting Hummels there were also 157 Hummel Munitionssträgers also completed. There were identical to the gun totting Hummels less the gun and were used to suppliy the Hummel batteries with ammo. They could also be converted to carring a gun in a short period of time.
In the Panzer-Artillery-Regiments one of the abteilungs, usually the III. was issued 6 Hummels and 1 munitionsträger.
The followin units were issued Hummels:
the following Panzer-Divisions
1 thru 9, 11 thru 14, 16 thru 20, 23 thru 27, 116, Lehr, GD, FHH-1, HG
the following Panzergrenadier-Divisions
3, 10, and 29
the following SS Divisions
1,2,3,5,9,10 and 12
the following independant units
sHeeres Artillerie-Abt. 536 and 845 plus 5 others
The Hummel served first fighting at Kursk in July 1943 and in all fronts thereafter until the wars end.
At the end of 1944 there were the following number of Hummels on the register of the Wehrmacht.
EASTERN FRONT with 223
PGD FHH with 13
1. PD with 18
3. PD with 6
6. PD with 10
8. PD with 15
13. PD with 9
20. PD with 2
23. PD with 6
3. SS PD with 10
5. SS PD with 4
16. PD with 7
17. PD with 7
19. PD with 12
25. PD with 6
Heeres Art. Abt. 1042 with 6
Heeres Art. Abt. 101 with 16
II./Art. Rgt. 71 with 13
24. PD with 8
4. PD with 3
PGD GD with 11
7. PD with 4
?? PD with 7 [microfilm not readable]
Heeres Art. Brigade ??? wth 12 [microfilm not readable]
14. PD with 6
12. PD with 3
WESTERN FRONT with 49
9. SS PD with 11
116. PD with 7
Führer-Begleit Brigade with 12 [in transit]
9. PD with 13 plus 2 in transit
2. PD with 311. PD with 1 [in transit]
SOUTHWEST FRONT with 1
26. PD with 1
So on 30 December 1944 there were still 273 Hummels on the register.
I have the following data for 15 March 1945 for the following units:
1. PD with 17
3. PD with 5
6. PD with 10
23. PD with 6
PD FHH 2 with 1 [previously 13 PD]
1. SS PD with 12
2. SS PD with 6
3. SS PD with 9
5. SS PD with 4
9. SS PD with 8
12. SS PD with 12
The 100 number you noted probably referred to the desired quantity that Hitler wanted available by May 1943 for Kursk. There were only 55 available in May 1943.
Hope this data helps.
Best regards,
Ron Klages

Sorry to resurect such an old thread...
I'm curious as to wether any of the panzer grenadier units had Hummels at this time
Is there a similar list for the Wespe?
Cheers
Bob

According to an overview compiled by the OKH/Gen.Qu. the status of s/p artillery with front line units on 15.3.1945 was as follows (on hand strength):
1. Pz.Div. = 0 Wespe/17 Hummel
2. Pz.Div. = 0 Wespe/3 Hummel (28.2.1945)
3. Pz.Div. = 9 Wespe/5 Hummel
4. Pz.Div. = 8 Wespe/4 Hummel
5. Pz.Div. = 16 Wespe/7 Hummel
6. Pz.Div. = 4 Wespe/10 Hummel
7. Pz.Div. = 12 Wespe/3 Hummel
8. Pz.Div. = 6 Wespe/7 Hummel
9. Pz.Div. = 0 Wespe/9 Hummel
11. Pz.Div. = 7 Wespe/5 Hummel
12. Pz.Div. = 10 Wespe/3 Hummel
13. Pz.Div. = 0 Wespe/1 Hummel
14. Pz.Div. = 8 Wespe/6 Hummel
16. Pz.Div. = 1 Wespe/0 Hummel
19. Pz.Div. = 5 Wespe/2 Hummel
20. Pz.Div. = 0 Wespe/2 Hummel
21. Pz.Div. = 0 Wespe/4 Hummel
23. Pz.Div. = 13 Wespe/6 Hummel
25. Pz.Div. = 1 Wespe/1 Hummel
26. Pz.Div. = 17 Wespe/0 Hummel
116. Pz.Div. = 5 Wespe/6 Hummel
Pz.Gren.Div. GD = 5 Wespe/9 Hummel
Führer-Gren.Div. = 0 Wespe/14 Hummel
1. SS-Pz.Div. = 1 Wespe/12 Hummel
2. SS-Pz.Div. = 0 Wespe/6 Hummel
3. SS-Pz.Div. = 5 Wespe/9 Hummel
5. SS-Pz.Div. = 11 Wespe/4 Hummel
9. SS-Pz.Div. = 3 Wespe/8 Hummel
12. SS-Pz.Div. = 2 Wespe/0 Hummel (12 Hummel in the process of delivery! Not sure if they ever arrived.)
H.Art.Brig. 88 = 7 Wespe/12 Hummel
H.Art.Abt. 101 = 0 Wespe/6 Hummel
H.Art.Abt. 536 = 0 Wespe/14 Hummel
H.Art.Abt. 1042 = 10 Wespe/6 Hummel
Did not have the time to cross-check all data against divisional records. From experience with this type of listings I know that they usually contain a few transcription errors and typos, but on average they are 95% correct.

ammo carriers?
Martin,
Is it possible that some of the figures include actual ammunition carrier variants mentioned by Ron earlier in the thread and not just soley 'Artillery' pieces'?. If not the 1st Pz Div figures for the number of Hummel present makes interesting reading!
Cheers

Re: ammo carriers?
IIRC the orgainisation of a Hummel Batterie is for 6 guns- so that would make 1PD 1 gun shortdonwhite wrote:Martin,

@donwhite
Bob is correct. The I./Pz.Art.Rgt. 73 of the 1. Pz.Div. was authorized during the fall of 1944 to have 3 'Hummel' batteries instead of 2 'Wespe' and 1 'Hummel' batteries thus it was indeed 1 'Hummel short by mid March 1945.
The Gen.Qu. listing should contain only artillery pieces and no ammo carriers.

Ooops
Speaking of transcription errors, I've just corrected one I made in my above listing. After losing its last 'Hummel' during November 1944 the I./Pz.Art.Rgt. 93 of the 26. Pz.Div. converted to 'Wespe' only. So it's 17 Wespe/0 Hummel and not 0 Wespe/17 Hummel as I had written earlier. I have already edited my listing accordingly.
You never can be careful enough

Re: NUMBER OF HUMMEL'S BUILT
I find that many depolyment of SP batteries was two Wespe batteries and one Hummel battery and changed to one Wespe batteries and two Hummel batteries, at least I find in Fuhrer Grenadier Brigade, 116th Pz division, 9th SS Hohenstaufen during the Ardennes offensive
