Researching family history in Germany?

Post by plant-pilot »

I have been researching my family history for a few years now. It's an ongoing project that means my family tree gets bigger and bigger. I have just found that in the late 1800s some of my ancestors moved from the NE of England to Gelsenkirchen in Germany and settled there.

How would I go about finding out the family history of these people. I'm sure there must have been a connection with the military at some point. Are records still held? Can I find an individuals details? Luckily it's a very rare name in Germany (Stoves of which there are only 14 in the phone book for the whole of Germany) which may help.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Try the website of the Mormon church.
They have zillions of names and other info digitized, and it is there for the taking.

Write to the Amtsgericht at Gelsenkirchen, and the Public Records Office in London.
