Dimtrios Itsios.

Post by hoplite14gr »

Actually I post this most because I research.

Date: 6 April 1941.
Place: Western Kerkini mountain (Beles) - Greco-Bulgarian border.

The fortified border post P-8 had 4 Greek soldiers led by the reservist sergeant Dimitrios Itsios,
They put out quite a fight and surrendered when all 33000 bullets had been spend.
The Gebirgsjager major congratulated Itsios for his stout defense and then shot him!
He let the rest 4 go.

Two versions exist:
A. Dramatised description in Zalokostas book claiming he was tight on a tree and shot by German sergeant.
B. The surviving Greek soldiers claimed that the major pulled his pistol and shot him in the head

The only things I know was the 6th Gebirgs division was attacking the sector.
The "suspect unit" probably 143rd Gebirgsjager Regiment.
Stories of brutality follow this unit and in Crete. Sources place this unit as part of the 5th Division in this case though.

Facts are scetcy because there are no surviving veterans of the event in both sides.
Also probably the initial unit is said to have suffered in the Eastern frond and the individuals implicated in this died in Lappland.

Any info would be wellcome.

Thanks kind regards

Stefanos
