I wonder if bayonet training in the Heer was somewhat lagging behind that of Commonwealth armies. More than one Allied soldier has remarked that the Germans were good at laying down firepower but when confronted by bayonet charges folded up rather too easily.

Don't know much about it, but from my readings and discussions with German veterans over the years they preferred the entrenching tool to the bayonet in close combat. It certainly handles better than a bayonet. Bayonet practice was certainly part of the training, but seemed to be looked upon as being a bit outmoded.

One of my ex work colleagues who served with the 6th Australian Division was involved in two mutual bayonet charges in North Africa. On both occasions he asserts that neither side was keen to come to grips with each other and did their best to avoid being skewered. They practically ran past one another, avoiding eye contact. My mate was no coward, later being awarded the MM in New Guinea.
