Henry Allingham, Britain's oldest WWI Veteran

Post by Doktor Krollspell » Sat Jun 07, 2008 2:21 am

Henry Allingham have just celebrated his 112th birthday yesterday on June 6 ( :D  ) and is not only Britain's oldest man but also one of just three british WWI veterans still alive. Mr. Allingham, by the time already a veteran, was one of the first who joined the RAF when it was established in 1918. Here,s a short quote of the WWI experiences of Mr. Allingham (and if you follow the link you get more... ):

Mr Allingham is the last survivor of the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and also fought at the Somme and Ypres where he was bombed and shelled.

He joined the Royal Air Force when it was formed from the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) and the Army's Flying Corps in 1918.

His many medals and honours include the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the Legion D'Honneur - the highest military accolade awarded by France.

And when asked about the meaning of (long) life...
He has joked that the secret to his longevity is "cigarettes, whisky and wild women".

In the BBC website (follow link) there's the RAF paying tribute to Henry Allingham.
