Thanks Paul and sorry John... and Doktor "orden muss sien" Krollspell! What can I say?
You should have stormed at it right away!
Here's the next one: Who is he (better known for his post war work)?
Top: With his comrades-in-arms (middle beside standing NCO) & One year later (in NCO uniform)
Bottom:Post war remembrance (as he saw himself) & In profile without moustache
(actually looking at wife - cropped for riddle purpose)
Creative regards

Re: A Quiz!
Hello Waleed and all Feldgrau Art lovers!
This German WWI veteran is none other than the expressionist painter Otto Dix, who is probably best remembered for his post-war anti-war art depicting the Hell in the trenches in Flandern. For example "Flandern" (1934)...

Re: A Quiz!
Yes Doktor!
WWI Machine-gunner/Trench-warrior/Storm-trooper. Post war "Neue Sachlichkeit" painter. Nazi era "entartete künstler" and finally WWII conscripted Volkstürmer.
No wonder I can't find a picture of him smiling...

Re: A Quiz!
Hello Doktor and Waleed:
Yes, Waleed I should have "stormed" it right away in true 1914 fashion, but I decided to use Hutier tactics and infiltrate around its flanks Unfortunately I was beaten to the punch by a wiley Dane full of elan. Doktor you are correct, we Anglo-Saxons need to keep our end up; hopefully the Commissar and I can hold the fort until reinforcements arrive. Best wishes.

Re: A Quiz!
Those reinforcements better be quick, because here comes yet a Italo-Irish-Middle Eastern-Danish riddle!
THE DOUBLE - WWI
A person related to the person in the Feldgrau Photo Riddle.
Yes a WWI uniform and BIG shoes, but who might he be?

Re: A Quiz!
Sorry John, but apart from actually being allied to Imperial Germany, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was an Ottoman General and Army commander during WWI and that's more that you can say about Waleed's Mystery man here... And he had much more hair in his later years!

Since this is a double-riddle, don't hesitate to have a rewarding go at the FFPR thread for some complementary information from Waleed!

Re: A Quiz!
The Doktor knows!
What can I add... He had 3 sons and 2 daughters. One son (see other riddle) died young, two would survive the war (WWII) as did his daughters and wife (one daughter would come to hate her father for allowing the killing of her husband).
One son loved/hated movies and one loved jazz.

And here's the very famous sister-in-law to one of the surviving sons of Waleed's Mystery man! A mystery for how long I wonder...
