Schwere Art. Abteilungen in front of Warsaw - Poland 1939.

For the assault on Warsaw the Art Kdr. 20 (Generalleutnant Zukertort) was in charge of artillery support . To do so would have at his disposal Art. Kdr. 3, 22, 24 and 31; Art. Rgt 10, 18 , 19, 24, 31 , 46, 49 , 80 , 115 , 213 , 610 , 614 , 623 and 627. Besides the Schwere Art. Abt. II. / 39 , II . / 40 , II . / 46, II. / 49, II. / 50 , II . / 53, II. / 54, II. / 55 , II . / 56, II. / 58 II. / 59, II. / 60 , II . / 66, II. / 67, 607, 629, 631, 634 and 641.

Two heavy artillery groups took part in the Polish campaign of September 1939. They were:

Schwere Art. Abt. 624 organized with three batteries, a battery with guns of 210 mm and two batteries with pieces of 305 mm Skoda M16 . On September 1, 1939 it was attached to the IV AK.

Schwere Art. Abt. 641 organized with three batteries, a battery with guns of 210 mm and two batteries with pieces of 305 mm. On September 1, 1939 it was attached to the VIII AK, later from 23 September 1939 onwards to 8 AOK for the assault on Warsaw, attached to Art. Regt 623 with the Schw. Art. Abt 631 and 607.

Meanwhile before the suburb of Prague, on the eastern bank of the Vistula, from Sep 23, 1939 on were emplaced with the I. AK the following Schwere Art Abteilungen (groups):

II./ 37; II./ 48 (with the 61.ID); II./ 57 (With the 11. ID); II./ 68. All of them organized as mixed groups (one battery of sK 10.0 cm and two batteries of sFH18 15.0 cm).

Another heavy group located in front of the suburb of Prague, on the eastern bank of the Vistula, was the schw Art. Abt. 604:

On September 20, 1939, the heavy group was shifted and took new positions in the suburb of Praga, east of Warsaw. Here were beaten the Polish positions on the outskirts of Prague. On September 25, 1939, the group was deployed again before Modlin and supported the attack against Modlin from the north of Torun.

In the photo I found reads " Halbkette mit der Geschütz schwerem Ari - Ari - Abteilung 680 im Einsatz vor Warschau, Polenfeldzug " (half-track with a heavy howitzer of Art Abt. 680 in action in front of Warsaw, Poland Campaign)

Now the Art. Abt. 680 was redesignated as such only on February 21, 1940, consisting of the following batteries Bttr. 698, 1./Art.Abt . 604 and 1./ArtAbt . 607 so the photo may well be a part of the 1. / schw Art Abt. 604 or 1. / schw Art Abt. 607 (both groups equipped with a battery of howitzers sFH 18 15.0 cm and two batteries of Mörser 21 cm).

According to Order No. 7 of Artillerie Kommandeur 20 for the attack against Warsaw, dated September 25, 1939, the allocation of ammunition was:

For the AR 623: 13 t 10 cm; 33 t of 21 cm and 45 grenades of 30.5 cm.

For the XI AK: 30 t of 10 cm; 300 t of sFH; 220 t of l.FH ; 12 t of l.FH (fog)

For the XIII AK: 7 t of 10 cm; 300 t of l.FH; 350 t of sFH
