Occupation of the Sudetenland - 1938!

The Aufklärungsregiment 6 was formed in October 1937 with the AA 6 Munster (I. Abteilung) and the AA 8 (II. Abteilung). According the caption of these pictures, it shows vehicles of the 6. / Aufkl Reg 6 (II Abteilung.); But according to some sources the regiment was disbanded in April 1938 and by another in November 1938. The question is did it take part in the occupation of the Sudetenland with the 1. Le Div? ...........

Occupation of the Sudetenland, 1938!

On October 2, 1938 at 05:30 hours, came the order to leave the training area of Grafenwoehr and move towards Falkenstein. On October 3, 1938, as one of the first German troops, the regiment crossed the border into Czechoslovakia by Klingenthal. The first break of the PR 2 was the area of Gossengrün. On the morning of October 5, 1938, the regiment left their quarters, reaching the next destination Chodau by Carlsbad. In Chodau the PR 2 had a warm welcome. Next day the regiment marched and via Carlsbad reached the city of Saaz, where garrisoned the HQ and the I. Abteilung, while the II. Abteilung remained at Kaaden.

Hello to all :D; something more...........................

The 61st Infantry Regiment in the Sudetenland (Infanterie Regiment 61 im Sudetenland). That unforgettable moment.

On the memorable night of September 29-30, the long-awaited order to march also arrived. At 0:28 a decision of the four great powers was signed in Munich. On the morning of this memorable day, the first companies of the regiment headed for the border. In March of this year, the former German East Mark (Austria - Ostmark) was returned to the Reich without a shot. The regiment was there. But now the German land was to be returned to the motherland and the Greater German Reich would be complete. And the regiment should be there again and should be the first to cross the border.

In the Freyung area, the regiment occupied other quarters before entering the departure areas at the border. Shortly before, my 8th (Machine Gun) Company was greeted by the Commander-in-Chief of our Army Group, Colonel General Ritter von Leeb, who greeted the soldiers by shouting "Heil" and praised their direct view, animated response, and good condition of the horses. During the farewell, the Colonel General asserted that the army could be proud to hold a shield of peace over all Germans.

In the evening of the same day, when the sky turned grey, the regiment marched to the staging areas in Schnellenzipf and Landstraβen (now the disappeared village of Dolní Silnice) in Kleinphilippsreut - Kunžvart (now Strážný) in compliance with all security measures. war.

A light rain was falling, the dark roads reflected dim lights around the moving vehicles. The night seemed unusually dark, darker than here. Deep woods and villages lay silent as a gray column passed over them into the hills, advancing towards the Kleinphilippsreut Basin. The picture is like in the west in 1918, when a regiment marched through the Argonne Forest to the front for action, except there was no rumble from the front, no bright bullets in the night sky, but also soldiers marching more freely . The weight of the difficult hours and days ahead did not rest on them, but their breasts felt a joyful anticipation. What about the fact that it was constantly raining and the soldier was completely drenched? No one cared about these little things and inconveniences.

At Kleinphilippsreut the marching column split. The I. Battalion proceeded to the Schnellenzipf position and the 6. Company with a heavy machine gun platoon of the 8. Company to the customs Landstraβen as security. Behind them in the woods near Schwarzenthal the II.Battalion sought accommodation. In quickly pitched tents, a weary troop lay down to rest until they died. But behind this guard, personnel worked, anti-aircraft guns and batteries arrived, motorcyclists raced through the dark of night, and tanks and armored reconnaissance vehicles thundered forward. Liaison units built the line.

Before it finally dawned after this cold and wet night, which gave the young soldiers only a vague idea of war, the unit emerged from their tents to collect themselves in the field kitchens with hot tea and spent a few hours in the middle of the forest camp. Engineers were already building an emergency bridge at Schnellenzipf for the next crossing.

Hello to all :D; something more...........................

The 61st Infantry Regiment in the Sudetenland (Infanterie Regiment 61 im Sudetenland). That unforgettable moment.

Endless joy for the liberators.

Meanwhile, the Czechs were in nearby Kunžvart/Kuschwarda. We were told by older women, men and children who had fled in the last hours for fear of revenge from the executioners who left. However, the main mass of the Czech garrison withdrew during the night, robbed like a thief and forbade the remaining residents to leave the houses. By noon, it was clear that the 1st section of the 1st occupation zone had been completely evacuated. This was evidenced by individual flags with swastikas, which were hung across the border.

The unflappable German occupation could thus begin at the appointed hour. At exactly 2:00 p.m., the barrier at the Landstraβen customs was lifted and the road to Kunžvart is clear. An unforgettable moment!

Our thoughts went back to the morning hours of March 13, when the I. and II. Battalion stood at the customs barrier at Kiefersfelden ready to march towards Kufstein. At the same time the III. Battalion occupied the bridge over the Salzach near Freilassing so that it could march on Mozart's city of Salzburg.

And it was Saturday again, once again the battalions stood at the border embarked on a march to the old German New Land. At the customs office in Landstraβen, the Division Commander, Generalleutnant Hartmann, together with the CO of the 61st Infantry Regiment, Oberst Sintzenich, celebrated the great deed of the Leader and Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht with a short speech. Then the 6. Company with a heavy machine gun platoon from the 8. Company started the parade, while the 1. Battalion, under the command of Oberstleutnant Nebauer, safely marched from Schnellenzipf via Kunžvart and Řasnice to Vlčí Jam. Maj. Pürkauer with the II. Battalion occupied Radvanovice and Dolní and Horní Cazov at the same time. Oberstleutnant Wittstatt with his III. Battalion received its own combat mission, but because the occupation was carried out peacefully, it was taken in the following days through customs Kleinphilippsreut - Landstraβen.

Hello to all :D; something more...........................

The 61st Infantry Regiment in the Sudetenland (Infanterie Regiment 61 im Sudetenland). That unforgettable moment.

Endless joy for the liberators.

In Kunžvart, which meanwhile was ceremoniously decorated with swastika flags and Sudeten German Party flags, the units parade in front of the division commander. Endless cheers greeted the liberators from Czech want and suffering. The words on his lips froze these old, worried, well-groomed peasants, and great tears of emotion ran down their wrinkled faces.

To welcome this entrance, which was immediately shouted everywhere, people gathered from all over the area, so that the surrounding villages seemed uninhabited. People left everything, they ran away from work in the fields, the stable or the kitchen. Many people were not here, only those who stayed, most of them fled to the other side of the border. And the few who stayed home were very busy, mainly having to tend the cattle on various farms. But now they had nothing to fear, they let everything go, just so they could be there too. They have learned from recent events as never before.

The border line of the first day was reached at Vlčí Jam. Field guards were deployed and secured the Vltava Valley, the Czechs' main fortified line. Here a continuous line of bunkers was established, which the population called caverns. Often just 50m apart and also between houses were these well-camouflaged concrete blocks, which were supposed to cause many thousands of deaths. Until the last days, the Czechs worked on it and put up barricades for them.

As the unit made its way to the security line that night, many plumes of smoke could be seen rising across the Vltava, and hollow detonations could be heard. The Czechs destroyed the last remnants of their military installations before withdrawing.

From there, the population looked longingly at the already liberated towns and eagerly awaited our next march. It could only start the next day (it was a beautiful sunny autumn Sunday) at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, since it was only after noon, when the last train with the remains of the Czech authorities left.

Hello to all :D; something more...........................

The 61st Infantry Regiment in the Sudetenland (Infanterie Regiment 61 im Sudetenland). That unforgettable moment.

Destruction not only in the forests.

To the delight of the waiting population, the I. Battalion began its advance into Volary. The II. Battalion turned to Horní Vltavice and the III. Battalion occupied Zátoň. The bunker line thus lay in or behind the new section. The emptiness of the loophole threatened to be empty, and on both sides of the marching path lay cleared roadblocks.

In the woods it was a picture of doom! Numerous large trees and young vegetation have fallen victim to the axes of Czechs in recent days. The Czechs hastily felled through the woods to obtain a firing field. The bridges were also drilled and ready for blasting. All this has now lost its meaning and purpose. Armed men arrived at the fortifications, to whom the frightened population expressed their warm thanks by shouting "Heil Hitler".

The early medieval town of Volary with amazing old wooden buildings reminiscent of alpine villages, whose historical importance grew during the time of merchant caravans and large merchants who rested here. The town was then the last "soumar square" on the Golden Trail from Passau to Prachatice.

But there was no time for contemplation. To the indescribable cheers of the population, troops stopped in the square in front of the Commanding General of VII. Army Corps, General Ritter von Schobert. Flags and garlands, set in every rush, gave this peasant and craft town an unprecedented image and a festive, cheerful setting. And the next day also brought festive and festive hours for both the population and the unit.

These days a mutual bond was formed and the population richly endowed the unit with heart and hand. Beer and bread were offered for refreshments. If anyone wants to talk about touching thanks for the entry of German troops, then they must talk about the Volars, as well as other places in the Sudetenland. The inhabitants did not know what they would do out of love for the soldiers sooner. Whether to hug them or cover them with flowers, if they could, they would take a rifle and gear to make it easier to march.

Hello to all :D; something more...........................

The 61st Infantry Regiment in the Sudetenland (Infanterie Regiment 61 im Sudetenland). That unforgettable moment.

They came to help

Occupying Volary, Záton and the Horní Vltavice - Borová Lada line, the regiment reached the border by de II. Zone and security patrols were established again. The patrols of the retreating Czechs were in front of the German soldiers in sight. So, despite the cheers and the peaceful occupation, it was not a completely peaceful scene: patrols and barricades with anti-tank guns on the roads and paths leading east, guns and anti-aircraft guns in firing positions ready for deployment. Peace with signs of war.

The controls were also strict. No one was allowed here or there without the necessary documents. But nothing happened. The Czechs followed orders, and when the Czech officers came to our line at the meeting, they acted like gentlemen. The fact that they fought for every inch of land can be understood from their point of view. Here, however, the border commission decided.

In the following days the first young Sudeten Germans who had just served in the Czech Army also began to attend,
or those who did not have the opportunity to flee during the mobilization. They came individually or in groups and were delighted to be home again and in German.

The regiment remained in this section until October 8. However, the unit was not idle, because doing nothing was like poison to it. The weaker the border service, the more the population was helped to harvest tubers and cultivate the fields. Everything had remained insecure due to the uncertainty of the last few weeks and the shortage of manpower.

The dreaded Czech winter, which usually arrives very early, was the reason for the rapid help needed to save such an important harvest for the population. Entire companies supported with men, horses and carts for agricultural help. This quickly created such a close and cordial relationship between the inhabitants and the soldiers, that they already parted after a few days, when the regiment on October 8 at 12:00 embarked on another march to the Vimperk section.

Hello to all :D; something more...........................

The 61st Infantry Regiment in the Sudetenland (Infanterie Regiment 61 im Sudetenland). That unforgettable moment.

Liberation from the suffocating shadow of Czech lust for power.

It was Saturday again. A cold and icy Czech wind was blowing around the dark festive forest near the wild Boubín. Sometimes it also rains, but then the sun comes out. The road near Kubova Huta rises up to a thousand meters above sea level, from where it descends slowly towards Vimperk.

High above the city stands an ancient castle. The foundation stone was laid by the powerful counts of Bogen in 1195. Today it is the property of Prince Schwarzenberg. Its history is rich, as is the history of this city. Its inhabitants were also once wealthy, as evidenced by the magnificent bourgeois buildings to this day.

But as soon as the city entered the suffocating shadow of Czech desire for power, it began to decline from within, despite the gleaming Czech beauty from without. Today, new residential houses, administrative buildings and, above all, schools are found here as the backbone of the effort to checkarize. However, poverty and hardship spread and the flourishing industry collapsed. But the population resisted this ordeal, in which they had a hard time, and on October 8 of this year (1938) they had their happiest day. His land returned to his homeland with the arrival of the regiment.

The ringing of bells welcomed us and accompanied us on our way through the festively decorated city. It was filled with banners, garlands and flags, and the marching entry into the city took place with endless cheers. All Vimperk were on their feet to welcome. After a vigorous march, which was watched over by the division commander, we stayed in the city.

The city seemed transformed as if with a magic wand. The terrible times of foreign domination have been forgotten. The Czech troops, who had withdrawn from the city the day before, had left nothing here as a reminder of the terrible fate that threatened to eradicate everything German. With the German troops, Vimperk returned blood to blood, spirit to spirit, faith, hope and courage.

In a massive gathering in a beautifully decorated square, the population expressed its gratitude to the Führer on the night of October 9. After an endless torchlight procession through the festively lit city, an uplifting celebration ceremony was held. All Vimperk was there, no one who could still stand was home. Two companies of honor with flags and music demonstrated the belonging of the people and the army, which was also confirmed in the speeches of the mayor, representatives of the Sudeten German Party and the regimental commander.

The regiment stayed for 14 days in this hospitable city located right on the border (the new one after the occupation), to which several companies provided advanced patrols, field guards, construction of barriers and implementation of border controls.
