German Army Signal Corps 1934 - 1939.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; here goes something dealing with the reconstruction of the German Army Signal's branch.........

Reconstruction of the German Army Signal’s branch.

Just days after taking power, Hitler informed the army leadership that their target was that Germany went out of the military and political imprisonment in order to become a state which would led the European policy. On February 3, 1933, the generals were told about his intention that the army - as the main guarantee for achieving this goal - soon had to expand again in order to use it later, if necessary, to conquer Lebensraum in the East if Germany needed it.

For the Army Branch of Communications, the spring of 1933 brought the first - yet secret - rearmament measures:

• creation of new battalions (Abteilungen) plus the organization of radio companies in the already existing abteilungen.
• increase the number of officers cadets since April 1, 1933 by eight times;
• increase the number of officers and NCOs with former soldiers of communications and prepare them for new tasks.

The creation of new formations were carried out by cells. For this, existing companies or officers or NCOs were used to form the basis of the new organizations, which were filled later with conscripted recruits. Thus the process of expanding the Army Communications branch until the beginning of the war in 1939 took place in three separate periods.

Hello to all :D; here goes something more.........

Reconstruction of the German Army Signal’s branch.

The structure of the new Signal’s battalions included a wired communications (telephone) company and a wireless (radio) company, essentially equivalent to previous formations. Its smaller structural units, sections (Truppe) - received more and better equipment and increased its motorization. For example, there were wired sections: light, medium and heavy, wire lying telephone and operators of telephone and telegraph stations.

The wireless companies possessed various radio equipment, radio patrols, radio listening posts. The radio devices ranged from stations of 5, 20 and 200 watts of power, a large number of receivers with different bandwidths, portable radios - later known as knapsack radios - in long, medium and short range. In 1934, the General Command ordered the creation of the Korps-Nachrichtenabteilungen (Battalions of communications at Army Corps level), which had a third company, for the laying of communications cables (Feldfernkabel-Baukompanie).

Hello to all :D; more.........

Schweres Feldfernkabel (heavy field cable for long distance).

Command and control (C2) depend on secure and reliable communications, so the cable connection between the HQ and the units had to be established as soon as possible. Wherever possible, existing public telephone networks would be used for these trunk lines, but these were often destroyed by the retreating enemy. In this case, the lines were provisionally built using “Schweres Feldfernkabel” or heavy long-distance field cable. As quickly as possible, the communications troops would work to restore public networks or build new overhead telephone lines so that the "Schweres Feldfernkabel" could be reused during mobile operations.

The “Schweres Feldfernkabel” (FFK) consisted of two pairs of double-stranded cables with strong rubber insulation. Each end of the cable was equipped with a large four-pin connector. The FFK cable came in reels with 250 meters of cable each weighing 65 kg. Too heavy to be transported by man, it had to be transported and laid using a special cable car or from vehicles.

The cable could be laid on the ground or suspended with special cable hooks. Without Pupin coils (*) distances of 40-48 km could be reached, with coils 100-120 km.

(*) is an inductor that, placed at regular intervals along a telephone circuit made up of copper wires, reduces the attenuation and delay distortion of the circuit in the range of voice frequencies, with the consequent increase in range of the comunication.
