The PR 1 – The Erfurt garrison.

On March 16, 1935, the army began to expand in Germany with the introduction of conscription. Between 1934 and 1939, six army groups and 22 general commands (army corps) with more than 50 divisions emerged from two corps commands and seven divisions of the Reichswehr; The air force was created from scratch. This meant immense construction work, almost always on a three-shift system 24 hours a day. After 1934, new military accommodation buildings were built exclusively on the outskirts of the city. Standard plans were now used for the new barracks buildings.

Erfurt would once again become a large military location with several military branches, as it was in the days of the Prussian army. Five barracks, a hospital and the Erfurt-Bindersleben airbase barracks were built. Temporary accommodation was carried out in Petersberg until the beginning of the war. On October 8, 1935, the population welcomed the new Wehrmacht units on the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz in Erfurt. They were received with flowers.

The PR 1 – The Erfurt garrison.

The Löberfeld and Steiger barracks, both built in 1934-1935, were one of the first new military buildings in Erfurt. Of them, the Steigerkaserne is undoubtedly the best exponent. Both barracks were used by the newly formed armored force.

Panzer Regiment 1 was founded on October 1, 1935 with two detachments (Abteilungen) of the Motor Vehicle Training Command II (Kraftfahrlehrkommando Ohrdruf). Together with the 2nd Panzer Regiment (Eisenach), it was subordinated to the 1st Panzer Brigade (Erfurt). This tank brigade belonged to the 1. Panzer Division (Weimar), which was formed from parts of the 3. Cavalry Division. The armored brigade personnel were housed in the old hunters' barracks. The HQ and the II. Abt. of Panzer Regiment 1 were stationed at Löberfeld Barracks and I. Abt. from PR 1 in the Steigerkaserne.

On November 14, 1937, the division commander held a grand swearing-in ceremony for the new recruits of Panzer Regiment 1 in the courtyard of the Löberfeld Barracks (see photos below).

PR 1 – March to Erfurt.

After playing the Badonviller march and the Panzerlied, General von Weichs, Dr. Zeitler and Major Schuckelt each gave a short speech. The podium was located in front of the current Hofbräuhaus (one of the oldest inns in Erfurt).
