11. Infanterie Division emblems

Post by Paulus II »

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me when each of the following emblems of 11. ID was used?
Or wether they were used simultaniously by different elements of the division?
And does anyone know which colours were used for the last one (taken from Lexikon der Wehrmacht)?

And....does anyone know any other emblems used by this division?

Thanks in advance,

Hello Paul !

According to Schmitz/Thies, Truppenkennzeichen, Vol. 4, the 3rd emblem
( red elk-head on silver/black shield ) was elected by a division-competition in winter 1941/42
and remained the emblem of the division until the end of the war.

Maybe it is of general interest to cite the origin of the coloured disk (same source) :

By order of OKH/WFSt./Abt.L. (Feb. 1941) - Guidance on enemy deception ...
...all troups moving to the east had to remove their unit emblems. These were to be replaced by
simplified emblems. But the new emblems were to be covered and revealed only after the attack had begun.

The I. A.K. choose for itself the symbols given in the attached scan
(silver square with broad green boarder and green disk above) and the at that time
assigned divisions (1.,11.,21.) used the same emblems from 27.3.41 onward , only in different colours.
From battle-experience in 1941, it was decided that a simplified emblem (only the disk) served its purpose
well enough, so it was used on sign-posts and sometimes vehicles as well. It was in use until autumn 1941.

The different colours of the divisions were :
- white for 1. ID
- red for 11. ID
- yellow for 21. ID

I don't have informations on the use of the other symbols and whether one of those was the
tactical emblem in use until March 1941.

Best regards,

hero.
