How were snipers allocated to units? Did Infantry Companies or Battalions have assigned snipers or were they in separate units and allocated down as needed?

Mid war some types of companies had a sharpshooter group. Real snipers were organised in a sniper pool at battalion level and distributed at the front as needed.

Thanks for the information. Where at the battalion wre they assigned, was there a sniper platoon in the headquarters company or the weapons company?
