Re: Original Totenkopf Photos
As far as the writing on the back, I would say:
"Karl Lehar
Mein Brüder-
chen in
Frankreich
1941."
---
Karl Lehar
My little brother in France, 1941.

Re: Original Totenkopf Photos
Franz, here is what I was able to read:
Nach dem Angriff bei Minus 12
Sept. 1943.
nach 3 Std. Trommelfeuer.
bottom (same text)
nach dem Angr. bei Minus (Sept. 1943)
nach drei Stunden Trommelfeuer
---
after the attack
at minus 12
September 1943.
after three hours of barrage
---
I am not sure if my translation of "Trommelfeuer" is correct with "barrage"

Re: Original Totenkopf Photos
By my knowledge of Sutterlin schrift that is not minus for 2 reasons, 1 it is September and 2 there is a punkt over the first i in both sentance!
It says minis which could be an abreviation for something or somewhere, in my own opinion.
I hope it helps you.
Andreas
p.s. and also the second sentance has no 12 in it , so I think the 12 of the first is writting of the postal system written after, it is both darker and slightly of line with the other script!

Re: Original Totenkopf Photos
Andreas, in order to distinguish between the letter "u" and the letter "n" in Suetterlin, there was an accent put over the letter "u"; and in the word "Trommelfeuer", you can see the accent over the letter "u" as well.
But I re-read it, and I think the word is "Mius", which would be a town in the Ukraine.
So I would correct my translation to this:
Nach dem Angriff bei Mius
12 Sept. 1943.
nach 3 Std. Trommelfeuer.
bottom (same text)
nach dem Angr. bei Mius (Sept. 1943)
nach drei Stunden Trommelfeuer
---
after the attack at Mius
12 September 1943.
after three hours of barrage
the "12" seems to be added at a later date.
What do you think, Andreas?

Re: Original Totenkopf Photos
The Mius is not a town but a river. Totenkopf (together with the Das Reich Division and the 3rd Panzerdivision under the II.SS-Pz.Korps) was engaged there against a russian bridgehead from 30 July till 3 August 1943. In September, Totenkopf was no longer there but was retreating from the area west of Charkow (Kharkov) towards the Dniepr. Even veterans can be wrong sometimes when their memory betrays them.

Hi.
In Norwegian it was used "-" on top of u to separate it from n, but as far as I know, not so in German.
