Re: FRONTLINE PHOTOS OF GERMAN SOLDIERS
Thank You very much, Annelie! Interesting photos. Some of the Stalingrad pics fit to the region my Grandpa was in.
Best Regards
Matthias

Re: FRONTLINE PHOTOS OF GERMAN SOLDIERS
Hi everyone! To day i came across with some interesting material on the battle of Stalingrad . I think these pics are interesting and breathtaking. They're conveying a true nature, atmosphere of what it's like - fighting in the city where are no unscathed buildings, no gasp of fresh air, no salvation. So I’ve decided to add some photos with my captions and comments.
I guess HeinrichFrey will like these pics too. by the way Heinrich as far as I understand you are keen on the battle of Stalingrad, aren't you?
So here we go...
STALINGRAD
By September 1 1942, russians could only reinforce and supply their forces by perilous crossings of the Volga, under constant bombardment by German artillery and aircrafts.
Fighting on Mamayev Kurgan, a blood-soaked hill above the city, was merciless. The position changed hands many times. Due to the artillery fire the hilltop looked like the moon's scape and the noise was deafening. One russian soldier wrote to his family 'The noise was appalling it was as if someone pushed steel needles through my eardrums right into the brain'.
Fighting for every street, every house, every corner and literally for every stone. That was another war. The war without match. It was neither a massive battle in the vast fields of Soviet Union nor was it highlands of Caucasus that was the city. The city that was enticing more and more forces, more and more resources, supplies, lives, destinies. That was a true hell, simmering cauldron for both germans and soviets.
Besides its strategic significance this city was also a prestige issue for Stalin and Hitler. That made this drama even more eerie and horrible.
I hope you'll like the pics and my commments.
Best regards, Klaus_Arzt

Re: FRONTLINE PHOTOS OF GERMAN SOLDIERS
The three last photos are from the 389. ID I guess. If my brandnew scanner is ready, I´ll bring some too. Several others of Grandpa Heinrich Frey are here: http://www.389id.de/Personen/Heinrich%2 ... 20Frey.htm including his papers. Edit: I would not say keen. I´m very interested.
Best Regards
Matthias

Re: FRONTLINE PHOTOS OF GERMAN SOLDIERS
He only met his brother-in-law Friedrich Mott coming in with a Romanian Unit. Nearby there must have been the "Division Azul". We can`t ask Friedrich. He is missing in action in Stalingrad-Stadt since Dec. 1st, 1942. 20 years ago I met a spanish veteran in Madrid, but the conversation was ineffectiv. My Spanish is worse than my English. Es verdad.

Yes I can but dont have any of Stalingrad
