Although I have NOT given up on the goal of creating a massive, illustrated study of all SS and Police recipients of the Knight's Cross, that is simply not in the cards at this time. My apologies to all those who've helped with the project and vainly anticipated a publication date.

But in the meantime, in accordance with the old cliche that is nonetheless true- "Information not shared is lost"- I will soon be churning out a CD-Rom with basic data- text only, no photos I'm afraid- on all of these award recipients. Format will be similar to that used in my and Andreas Schulz's 2004 CD The SS-Brigadeführer, 1933-1945. Page count- approximately 825, with roughly 750 individuals listed. "But there weren't 750 SS and Police RKT's, Mike," you might say. True enough. Also included will be various categories of individuals- mostly Wehrmacht members- whose receipt of the award was at least loosely connected to the Waffen-SS.

Here are some excerpts to give you all an idea of what you can expect.

If this strikes your interest, feel free to e-mail me with any questions or comment at [email protected] .

With best wishes and thanks for your interest,
~ Mike Miller

Bibliography

Notes on Nomenclature

Because most of the terminology used here is German, the reader may wish to consult the two glossaries provided (one for German military and political terminology, the other for German military, political, and civil decorations and awards). These are general-purpose glossaries that contain many more terms than are found in the text. Original German terms are used for all military and political ranks (e.g.- SS-Standartenführer [Colonel] and Gauleiter [Regional Leader of the NSDAP]).

Dates are rendered in European fashion (day/month/year) and in numeric format as follows: 01.01.1933 (i.e. 1 January 1933, or January 1, 1933). In cases where a precise date is unknown, the following formats are used:

 Dates in brackets, e.g. [01.12.1937] indicate that precise date of promotion or award is unknown, but that it is known a rank or award was held as of that date.
 In cases where the exact date of the month for an assignment, event, or award is unknown, dates are rendered with zeroes in the place where that precise date would appear, as follows: 00.04.1937 (April 1937).
 In cases where neither the exact date or the month is known, the date is rendered with zeroes in the date and month place, as follows: 00.00.1937.
 In cases where the exact year(s) of an assignment, event, or award are unknown, a single underscore is used, as follows: “00.00.193_”.
 In cases where the specific decade for an assignment, event, or award is unknown, a double underscore is used, as follows: “00.00.18__”.

Each entry is presented in the following format:

Name In cases where there are multiple names preceding the surname, the first name used by the officer is underlined, Franz Xaver Josef Maria Augsberger
Highest rank achieved (e.g.: SS-Obersturmbannführer)

Born: Date and place of birth.
Died: Killed in Action: / Suicide: / etc.: (date, place, and cause/circumstances of death)

NSDAP-Nr.: The recipient’s Party membership number, followed by the date(s) joined in parentheses).
SS-Nr.: The recipient’s SS membership number, followed by the date(s) joined in parentheses).

Promotions: A chronological listing of all known ranks held in the SS, SA, NSDAP, Wehrmacht, etc., preceded by the date the rank was granted. In cases where military ranks (e.g. Leutnant, Generalmajor, Feldwebel, etc.) are listed under promotions, the rank was held in the German Army unless otherwise indicated (e.g. “Leutnant (Luftwaffe)”).

Decorations & Awards: Listings of all known military, political, civil, and foreign awards received, preceded by the date of award (if known). These are presented with the highest or most prestigious awards at the top, and lower grade awards following them. Military awards given precedence/listed first, followed by political and civil
awards, and ending with awards from foreign nations.
Note: The year 2007 saw a dramatic event for researchers of this topic- the publication of Veit Scherzer’s Ritterkreuzträger 1939-1945. This comprehensive study, in addition to providing valuable data on all confirmed recipients, challenges the Knight’s Cross holder status of many individuals who have long been considered bona fide holders of the award. Herrn Scherzer provides detailed notes explaining the discrepancies he has noted- including the lack of documentary confirmation of awards in the Bundesarchiv, the failure of certain recommending commanders (notably “Sepp” Dietrich, Commander-in-Chief of the 6.SS-Panzer-Armee) to obtain approval from higher authority, and other factors which cast doubt on claims previously accepted as fact. In these unfortunate cases, I have placed an asterisk before the date of supposed award, followed in parentheses by a brief summary of Herrn Scherzer’s comments in dispute thereof.

Mike - Is there any special reason that this CD can't be mailed to addresses outside the USA? I would think that there would be a good market for this outside the USA. Over half the people who purchase my "Führerliste" CD set do not live in the USA.

No good reason, now that you mention it. And maybe that caveat is the reason NO ONE is expressing interest.

Many thanks, and I'll correct that.

Sincerely,
~ Mike

Just to recap:

*** I will begin shipping orders beginning 1. August 2009 ***

Price (for U.S. delivery): $30.00 + $4.95 shipping for U.S. orders (and possibly somewhat more for overseas; I will calculate shipping upon receiving the orders of those on other continents.

Payment may be made via Paypal (using the e-mail address [email protected] for the transaction, or by check/money order (please contact me via e-mail to request my mailing address). Shipping costs will vary, and of course be a bit higher for overseas orders. Please bear with me, as I am no businessman, but I guarantee that all orders will be handled as promptly as possible.

Page count: 857 pages. And to emphasize once again, it is NOT illustrated. You will receive your labeled disk, bearing my signature, in a DVD case with a cover bearing the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes and helmet decals of the Waffen-SS and Polizei.

With many thanks in advance for your interest,
~ Mike Miller

By the way, I also working on a similar study of SS and Police recipients of the following awards:

Deutsches Kreuz in Gold
Deutsches Kreuz in Silber
Ehrenblatt-Spange des Heeres
Nahkampfspange III. Stufe (Gold)

This CD-Rom will, I think, complement rather than compete with the magnificent series of my friend Mark Yerger. Format will be identical to that of the RKT CD.

Best wishes,
~ Mike Miller

I cannot speak for the printed version, but Mike very kindly showed me the manuscript draft. An absolute must as a reference tool - the detail of each winner is incredible. It should become the benchmark work on the subject in English. :[]

Just waiting for the Heer volume now, Mike. :D

I have just received my copy and I really do recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this area, and a must for those wishing to conduct research on the subject matter. There may not be any images but do not let that put you off - you can not argue with approx 860 pages of data for approx $40, if this was in book form it would run to multiple volumes and cost much much more.
A definite thumbs up from me.
