Re: leave in the wehrmacht

Greetings:

How often and for how long was "leave" granted?

When one was on leave did the travel expense eg. "to home
in another land" was it taken care of by the wehrmacht or was one expected
to pay for this from their own monies?

leave

Post by Bruno »

Annelie, there were several types of leave.
With the Reichwehr ( during non combat time) each army base was aloud to send up 5% of it's personnel on "Sontag leave". Leave saturday evening report Monday morning for duty. This was at the discretion of the Commander- so it could be used for reward or denied for punishment. So you could out for a night on the town in say- Berlin.

Servicemen were generally entitled to two weeks leave a year even during war time.
If you were at the front you also got one week travel time.
For example if you were in Russia and you were able to take your leave , you had to leave the HKL and go to a rear position- hand in your weapon- take available transport to a station and then train to Germany. This transport to Germany was free of charge for the serviceman
( Wehrmacht reimbursed the Bahn ). Travel was strictly controlled, you had to have all the correct stamps on your pass ( no diversions allowed)

Peace or War time within Germany you could travel were ever you wanted to on with subsidized train fare. Serviceman paid- 1.40 mark for a 100Km. Cheap!

The were also medical and wounding leaves- indeterminate time.
