What was the general feeling with the rest of the world when Hitler first rose to power?

Polish press a.d. 1933 gives usuall info about new leader of Germany, nothing special. But from 1934 relations get worse after wave of repretions against Polish minority in Germany. Years 1935 - 1938 were rather normal.
What is interesting almost to mid 1938, Germany and Hitler/nazi were not seen as one in Polish press. Generaly after 1938 image of IIIrd reich goes down, down ,down...

IN holland Hitler was considered as a threat by left wing politicians, especially during the Olympic Games. The official government policy accepted Hitler as a leader, al be it a new one. The Dutch government tried to stay neutral, though prince Bernhard (born in Germany and a member of the Allgemeine SS and Reiter SS till 1936, the year he married Juliana) kept in contact with his friends and family in Germany. Some of them were conviced nazi's. After the assination of Georg Elser in 1939 the Dutch Queen Wilhelmina even send a telegram to Hitler, wishing him luck(!).
Always in need for info about: Dutchmen in the NSKK, HJ and TeNo.

when hitler first came to power, which he seized through brutality, he began to systematically dismantle the german republic and abolish civil liberties. as far as i know the rest of the world did not take him seriously and viewed him as a joke. this obviously was a disastrous first impression.

Most people tend to think that this award was a favourable response to Hitler, it wasn't.
Time magazine gave him the award due to the fact that it considered him the most influential man of the year, but the article that accompanied the award was anti-Hitler in its stance

The King of England liked Hitler so much I'm surprised he didn't give him a Knighthood!
