Maori's fighting in Africa?

The Allies 1939-1945, and those fighting against Germany.

Maori's fighting in Africa?

Post by Alex Dekker »

Hello,

I am looking for information about Maori's fighting in Africa against the Italians (and maybe even the Germans). Did they fight with the British? I also heard something about Maori's who did fight during the battle at Monte Cassino. Is this true or just a rumour?

Bye,

Alex

Yeah. The 28th Bttn (Maori), 2nd NZEF fought in Africa at Tobruk, El Alamein & many, many other battles and engagements. They also fought extensively in Italy. In fact, 2/L Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu won the Victoria Cross for Tobaga Gap. Tunisia. IIRC he was the only Maori in WW2 to win the VC, and perhaps in NZ's entire history.

Thanks a lot Doc! This is some great information! But is it written down in a book or something? I haven't read much about the African campaigns  , so where did you get this information?

Thanks,

Alex

Well, you can go here first for some info:

IIRC there have been some works done that may have info. I'd just start searching the net for info in this battalion, and also look at general works on the NZEF in WW2.

Oops; I forgot to answer part of your question earlier. yes, they were at Cassino (as well as the Senio, Bologna, and a dozen or so other noted engagements in Italy). They also served in the Greek/Eastern Med theater.

There have been rumors to that effect, yes, but they may be just that. It's one of those "up in the air" issues.
