For the American and British Artillery Bns and Rgts, how were the batteries numbered/lettered? Are they 1,2,3 etc. or A,B,C etc. And does that number start over for each bn/regt? I cannot seem to find this info anywhere and was not sure if the used letters like the Infantry companies or numbers similar to the German Art Abts. Also since each battalion has a different number do they start over or like the Germans continue I./ batteries 1,2,3,4 II./ batteries 5,6,7,8.

RHA batteries were uniquely lettered. RA batteries were uniquely numbered, by type, ie field, medium, heavy, anti-tank, HAA, LAA, survey, coast. That said there were a few lettered batteries outside RHA. For fire control and related purposes field branch batteries (ie Field, Medium, etc) of any type were designated P, Q, R & S in each regiment. Survey batteries were all in the 4n series. Why these letters I hear you ask, obvious really they are between O and T, O being the observer, T being the target.
