Post by castro323 » Sat Mar 10, 2012 7:27 pm

Hi,

Will anyone provide me any source of information of monthly production of the KV-1S for late 1942 to July 1943 ?
Also if possible which units were equipped with the KV-1S?
(Specifically interest on the Heavy Tank Regiment Breakthrough)

Thanks in adavnce,

Hi Apollo,

All of the production of the KV-1S was undertaken at the Chelyabinsk Heavy Machine Plant No. 100 (ChZTM)

Monthly production figures for KV-1S as follows;

1942 (624 + 25 KV-8S Flamethrower tanks)
Aug - 34
Sep - 174 + 6 KV-8S Flamethrower tanks
Oct - 166 + 9 KV-8S Flamethrower tanks
Nov - 125 + 10 KV-8S Flamethrower tanks
Dec - 125

1943 (459 + 10 KV-8S Flamethrower tanks)
Jan - 93 + 7 KV-8S Flamethrower tanks
Feb - 72 + 3 KV-8S Flamethrower tanks
Mar - 53
Apr - 45
May - 75
Jun - 30
Jul - 52
Aug - 39

Total production - 1083 + 35 KV-8S Flamethrower tanks.

Not sure if there is anything in English that specifically identifies the Separate Breakthrough Tank Regiments equipped solely with the KV-1S model. That might take someone with access to Russian language sources perhaps even access to the Russian archives.

The Separate Breakthrough Tank Regiments that were equipped with KV-1 models were somewhat unique in that they were awarded Guards status based on their special weaponry and mission type instead of their combat record. With that in mind it is relatively easy to identify the KV-1 Separate Breakthrough Tank Regiments. These were;

Based on the Soviet Order of Battle for 1 February 1943, North to South on the eastern front.

46 Guards Tank Regiment - 67th Army - Leningrad Front
32 Guards Tank Regiment - 2nd Shock Army - Volkhov Front
3 Guards Tank Regiment - 11th Army - Northwestern Front
13 Guards Tank Regiment - 3rd Shock Army - Kalinin Front
29 Guards Tank Regiment - Front reserve unassigned - Briansk Front
262 Tank Regiment - Front reserve unassigned - Voronezh Front
17 Guards Tank Regiment/1 Guards Mech Corp - 3 Guards Army - Southwestern Front
48 Guards Tank Regiment - 21st Army - Don Front
47 Guards Tank Regiment - 65th Army - Don Front
8 Guards Tank Regiment - 66th Army - Don Front
22 Guards Tank Regiment/2 Guards Mech Corp - 2 Guards Army - Southern Front
53 Guards Tank Regiment/5 Guards Mech Corp - 2 Guards Army - Southern Front
41 Guards Tank Regiment/3 Guards Mech Corp - 51st Army - Southern Front
30 Guards Tank Regiment - Stavka VGK Reserve
50 Guards Tank Regiment - Moscow Military District

Hope this helps

David

Thank you von Salza for your time providing a detailed report of the allocations of the KV-1S.
I have in my possession of the
Soviet Order of Battle WWII vol.III Soviet Mechanized Corps & Guards Armored Units by Charles Sharp.
If you ever need any info. I may help you unless if you have this book already.

Once again thanks,
Apollo
