The guides and 13th lancers in north africa

Post by Eduard »

Both those regiments received battle honnours for their participation in the 1942 north africa campaign but I nowhere found them cited taking part in the operations described.

Also it's not known how were they equipped.

The Guides Cavalry
10th QUEEN VICTORIA'S OWN FRONTIER FORCE

In March 1942, they moved to Egypt and served on the Eighth Army's desert flank during the withdrawal to the El Alamein positions

BATTLE HONOURS

Bir Hacheim, Minqar Qaim, Deir el Shein, North Africa 1940-43.

13th Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers

Thereafter, they served against the Vichy French in Syria and then proceeded to see much of Iran and Iraq before joining the Eighth Army. Before the battle of El Alamein in October 1942,
BATTLE HONOURS
Gazala, Bir Hacheim, El Adem, Gambut, Sidi Rezegh 1942, Tobruk 1942, Fuka, North Africa 1940-43.

Any information about them?

Well,

About the 13th Lancers, it looks like they were employed during the last days of June 1942 during the retreat from Libia to Egypt covering the retreat of 8th army with some columns formed by the remains of the 3rd Indian motorised brigade someway reformed after being overrun by Ariete's tanks the first day of the axis offensive.

Some of those columns were trapped between the axis forces and the minefields and scarpements and some were destroyed. 13th lancers were nearly caught and probably suffered some loses those days and after extricating themselves were sent away of the front. So it looks like they took little part in the fighting just being involved in the run to alamein.

The guides I have found the mentioned just before the defeat of 18th indian brigade at deir shein in 1 july 1942. ....
