83rd A/T Regiment R.A

Post by David W »

Can anyone confirm the date of arrival into North Africa of the 83rd A/T Regiment?
I think it was somewhen in August 1942.

I assume by that time it was on 6pdrs, but can anyone confirm?
Thanks. Dave.

Hi David,
I get an establisment date for 83 Anti Tank of September 1941 and their being in Iraq before being in Egypt in 1941-1944. This information comes from Nigel Evan's site. That seems really quick to me. Do you know whether they were a divisional asset or a corps asset?
Cheers,

Thanks. Dave.

Hi David ,
According to Nigel Evan's site that means previous to 12 Oct 1942 a corps anti tank regiment would have been on WE III/128/1 instead of WE II/174/1.Unfortunately he doesn't explain what that was. After that date there are six battery variations of war establishment :( , which he does outline without giving any indication who used them :(
Cheers,

I'd forgotten I've got a lot of WO212/493, which was originally prepared immediately after WW2 by AG 4 (Medals). Taken from the ORBATs it summarises the overseas service of all RHA/RA units and arty HQs.

83 ATk Regt
19/8/42 (less det) - BTE
19/8/42 (det) - 50 Div, BTE
3/8/43 - 9 Army
22/1/44 (less bty) - 9 Army
1/4/44 - 3 Corps, BTE
28/4/44 - GHQ Palestine
1/9/44 - 3 Corps, GHQ Palestine
19/9/44 - Palestine Base, L of C
11/11/44 - GHQ BTE

73 ATk Regt
7/10/41 - GHQ Tps, MEF
19/8/42 - 23 Armd Bde Gp, 8 Army
11/9/42 - 7 Armd Div, 8 Army
1/10/42 - 8 Army
29/4/43 (1 bty) - 7 Armd Div, BTNA
6/5/43 - 8 Army
11/7/43 - 30 Corps, 8 Army, Sicily
19/8/43 - HQ 5 AGRA, 30 Corps, 8 Army, Sicily
3/9/43 - 30 Corps, Italy
25/5/44 - 30 Corps, 2 Army
7/12/44 - 2 Army
20/2/45 (less 2 btys) - u/c 43 Inf Div
19/3/45 - 30 Corps

79 ATk Regt
19/8/42 - 10 Army
1/1/44 - 31 Indian Armd Div, GHQ BTE
1/4/44 - 9 Army
1/9/44 - 31 Indian Armd Div, 9 Army

Some time between Jun 1942 and Jun 1943 the War Office quarterly Strength statements for units stopped showing the Establishment number, and in any case this was only given for units in UK not overseas. The earliest I have in June 42, and all the above regts were either overseas on on their way at that time.

Estbs in the ME were often local, and even then there was probably substitute equipment at some stages. I suspect that the only way to identify equipment held is to look at the War Diaries, formation HQ Commander's Diaries might be a shortcut instead of individual units, better still may be those for HQs RA but I'm not sure about the mandatory elements (if any) of Commander's Diaries in WW2.
