Lawrence of Arabia

Post by Douglas Aguiar »

Hi everybody!

I know that it is not exactly a WWII question, but I´d like to know what were the decorations that T. E. Lawrece (a.k.a. Lawrence of Arabia) won for his acompliments during the Palestine Campaign in WWI.

Thanks in advance,

Douglas.

Lawrence of Arabia

Hi Douglas

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but according to the Introductory Chapter of his book 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom', T.E.Lawrence refused to accept any rewards that were offered to him by the British Government for his exploits whilst fighting against the Turks.

Regards

Robert,

Thanks for the information. When you have in mind Lawrence´s personality, it wasn´t a complete surprise for me.

Happy New Year!

Douglas.

I would suggest that Lawrence's refusal to accept awards was evidence of his egotism, rather than the reverse. A truly modest and self-effacing man would not have turned up at Versailles in 1919 sporting elements of Arab clothing with his uniform unless he wanted attention. Everyone else at Versailles had chests full of medals, but only Lawrence stood out from the crowd because of his chosen dress.

Cheers,

Sid.
