11th Hussars

When did the 11th Hussars arrive in N.Africa? & with what equipment? I have a T.o&E for April 1941, after their re-fit at Alexandria, but nothing prior to that.

Hi David,

My ex-boss in Rhodesia in 1977 was an 11th Hussar officer during the war and I am pretty certain that he said 11th Hussars were in the Western Desert from at least as early as 1938. I seem to remember him mentioning WWI vintage Rolls-Royce armoured cars as well.

Hi David,
I get the following dates Palestine 1936, Middle East 1939-09 7 Arm Bde, Middle East 1940-04 recce regt 7 Arm Div, Middle East 1942-07 4 Arm Bde, Middle East 1942-11 7 Arm Div, Italy 1943. I'm sorry I can't give you any equipment information.

Who was the guy you mentioned? When I was in Armd Cars (RhACR) I was told we traced our linage to the "cherry pickers" since an 11 Hussars officer had founded the regt. (seemed kinda tenous to me)

Never got any more info on it though. I thought it pretty cool since I'd always fancied myself as a Hussar!

10 Apr 40 - 3 Nov 43 - 7 Armd Div Tps but sometimes under comd of armd bde
16 Jul 42 - 22 Nov 42 - 4 Armd Bde
