U.S. Rifle Grenade

The M1903 Rifle w/grenade launcher was a part of every U.S. rifle squad. How was the AT grenade for this weapon used? Was it a high angle weapon meant to penetrate thinner top armor or was it to be aimed in the shoulder held manner for direct fire aiming (or would the recoil of the weapon be too great for that)? What was the capability of armor penetration for the AT grenade?

I think its same for me to assume that it was used to take out long-distance 'weak' strong-points, such as a MG nest maybe.
