I think I may have made some sense out of this.......

The photo must be dated 1938/early 1939 judging by the shoulder straps. The strange inclusion on the collar tabs are I think, the badge of the SA-Standarte Feldherrnhalle. I know that after the death of Roehm, the best of the SA were put under Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe control, but how those emblems got on to SS tabs, I don't yet know! (Unofficial perhaps?)

I seem to have hit a wall on this one - can anyone else take it? I'll keep trying.

Hey Ealdwita!

Thank you for the explanations... I have been surfing after I saw your reply to post and found this:

Panzer Corps Feldherrnhalle (Germany)

I will also post the full photo I have, front and back, I hope that that will help a little. Regarding the info I had with the picture, the man to the left went into SS-Division "Wiking" in the war. His name is SS-Hauptscharführer Otto Georg Breitfeld, SS-Nr. 266 313

I found this on the net, and the strange inclusion on the collar tabs, looks a lot like this, dosen't it?

The Wolfsangel rune.

In Nazi Germany, the Wolfsangel was used by:

* the 2. SS Division Das Reich
* the 4. SS Polizei Division
* the 34. SS Volunteer Grenadier Division Landstorm Nederland
* the 60. Panzergrenadier-Division "Feldherrnhalle"
* the Sturmabteilung "Feldherrnhalle" Wachstandart Kampfrunen (Assault Unit—SA--"Warlord’s Hall" Guard Regiment
* the Hitlerjugend
* the NS-Volkswohlfahrt
* Werwölfe (Werewolves)

The collar patch shows a pair of SS runes together with a lightning flash, indicating membership of the SS-Nachrichtensturnmbann. The pointed shoulder strap is the second pattern worn by other ranks (enlisted men) in the SS-Verfugungstruppe (SS-VT) between 1933 and 1939. The single pip worn on the man's left-hand collar patch indicates the rank of SS-Unterscharfuhrer, the lowest NCO rank. The SS-Nachrichtensturmbanne was the SS-VT's signals battalion, formed during 1934/5.
