Pardon me for what is novice question.
Say a German soldier fell in battle and his fellows recovered his body for proper burial, what would typically become of his dog tags? Would they be buried with him, sent to his family, kept by a comrade, kept by a governmental records office?

If I'm correct, one half was taken by the NCO or whomever was leading the soldier. That would be kept for records. The other half still attached to the string would stay with the body as long as I know. I think it was occasionally put into the victims mouth. Lets see what others have to say.
