Brown Leather Chinstraps for M35-M42 Stahlhelm

Were unblackened brown or natural leather chinstraps ever permitted/worn with the helmet? For units such as Luftwaffe, Feldgendarmerie and late war after blackening was ruled out, I was wondering if this extended to the helment strap since all I've ever seen in color photos was the normal bacl strap.
