Looks like the so called "fasces":

It used to be a symbol of ancient romans and (very) later the one of the italian fascists.

As all soldiers know since thousands of years death is not noble. It´s just very final.

Indeed it is old and was later misused by the black-shirts as was the Swastika by the Brown-shirts.
Mind you it is still in use! - just look at this wellknown wall...

(...and before anyone gets any funny ideas, I'm NOT anti USA and NOT making any sort of comparison!).

Most of the items you seen in the color photos from TimeLife are items that were presented to Hitler as say on his Birthday celebrations and should be confused with items presented to him personally by heads of state. Most of those items such as this dagger were most likely stored at either the Berghof or at the Fuhrerbau in Munich. Those person items at the Berghof were destroyed by SS Obergruppenfuhrer Julius Schaub just before the US arrived. The items at the Fuhrerbau were basically captured intact. Although this dagger was not among any items found. If the Russians had found it -- they have eventually displayed it as they have other items. My guess would be that it was at the Berghof with Hitler's other pre-war personal items. Hence destroyed by Schaub.
Is your question answered now...?

My pleasure, Helmut!

The scan, provided by Mark Costa in the other forum is a rare gem, also the certificate about this very special patch.

You wont find such an information very often in the internet.

May be I am too late to answer, but if I'm not mistaken during the visit in 1937 Hitler was insigned of the rank of officer of the MVSN, the Italian Volunteer National Security Militia, usually worn by Mussolini himself as First Corporal of the Militia.
Mussolini had been a Bersaglieri corporal during WWI, too.
The rank shown by Hitler on his left arm is the same Mussolini was used to have on his uniform arms, salvo that in his one a fascist eagle replace the fascio littorio.
