award ring? 14-16

Post by Matzke »

Hi all,
Any advice on where to track down a replacment ring.
My Great grand mother used to wear it constantly and left it to me. To my great chagrin I lost it many years ago and don't know wher to start looking for a replacement.
Description from memory: Silver (800 mark) flat ring about 1 cm at widest face had enamel inlay of gothic cross with 1914-1916 in black, triclour band horizontal either side. Traces of 'oak leaves' either side of enamalling.
Can anyone tell me anything about this type of ring, where I may find pictures, or buy a replacement.
AFAIK have no heros in the family so may not be for an award!
All/any help much appreciated as I'm getting more sentimental as I get older!!.
Thanks for all replies in advance.

Hello Matzke!

I don't know if you need or already know this but here it goes:

Othmar Matzke recieved the Knight's Cross on November 18, 1944 as a Major and Commanding Officer of Pi.Btl. 211 (Pioneer Batallion).

Maximilian Matzke recieved the German Cross in Gold on November 5, 1942 as a Oberst and Commanding Officer of AR 194 (Artillery Regiment).

I don't know how common the name of Matzke is, or was, but maybe these two are relatives to your Grandfather Richard Franz Matzke...? Here you have a link for photo and some biographical info on Othmar Matzke:

Anyhow, the best of luck with finding, or replacing your Great Grandmother's ring! It's always terrible to loose items of great personal affection.

As I previously told you, my grandmother had a ring she wore daily as a child. It was her uncle's.

Did your ring look like this?

It has letters and numbers engraved on the inside that are barely visible. Something like D.R.R.M. over 6319_ _.[/img]
